BYD says its new chargers can power vehicles for about 250 miles in five minutes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n                              <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/mark-kelly-giving-up-his-tesla\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n              <use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n          <\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">Sen. Mark Kelly says he&#8217;s giving up his Tesla<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">06:59<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;To completely solve users&#8217; anxiety over charging, our pursuit is to make the charging time for EVs as short as the refueling time for fuel vehicles,&#8221; BYD founder Wang Chuanfu said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>BYD shares soared 6% to a record high on the news Monday, raising its market value to almost $162 billion. Tesla shares, by contrast, sank 4.8%.<\/p>\n<p>BYD, short for Build Your Dreams, has started pre-selling its new range of vehicles, called Han L and Tang L.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, BYD produced 1,777,965 battery-powered EVs, compared with Tesla which produced 1,773,443 vehicles that same year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some EV fans <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tesla-sales-elon-musk-reputation-brand-damage-trump-doge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have soured<\/a><\/span> on Elon Musk-owned Tesla, as Musk takes on a leading role in the Trump administration as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-doge-elon-musk-findings-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">or DOGE<\/a><\/span>. Tesla sales dropped 1.1% in 2024, marking the EV-maker&#8217;s first annual sales decline in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Some liberal-leaning customers say they have sold their Tesla&#8217;s to distance themselves from Musk, while investors have also expressed concern that Musk&#8217;s political actions are hurting the brand. With the billionaire at the helm, DOGE has\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elon-musk-doge-federal-employees-document-work-resign\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">abruptly terminated thousands of federal workers<\/a><\/span>, causing turmoil across multiple agencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tesla executives last week <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tesla-warns-trump-tariffs-could-hurt-us-automakers-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">sent an unsigned letter<\/a><\/span> to the U.S. trade representative warning that President Trump&#8217;s foreign trade policies could be harmful to domestic EV-makers.
