The agency suggested in the letters that the firms, in trying to recruit more people of color, could have discriminated against white candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe E.E.O.C. is prepared to root out discrimination anywhere it may rear its head, including in our nation\u2019s elite law firms,\u201d Andrea R. Lucas, the acting chair, said in a statement on Monday. \u201cNo one is above the law \u2014 and certainly not the private bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The letters come amid Mr. Trump\u2019s recent retribution campaign against <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/12\/us\/politics\/trump-law-firms-perkins-coie.html\" title=\"\">several prominent law firms<\/a>, which the president has accused of carrying out \u201charmful activity.\u201d This month, Mr. Trump issued an executive order aimed at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/06\/us\/politics\/trump-perkins-coie.html\" title=\"\">crippling Perkins Coie<\/a>, a firm that worked with Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign. He also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/25\/us\/trump-jack-smith-law-firm-security.html\" title=\"\">revoked security clearances<\/a> held by any lawyers at Covington &amp; Burling who were helping provide legal advice to Jack Smith, the special counsel who led investigations into him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last week, the president also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/14\/us\/politics\/trump-law-firm.html\" title=\"\">restricted the business activities of Paul, Weiss,<\/a> Rifkind, Wharton &amp; Garrison, specifically calling out one of its former lawyers, Mark F. Pomerantz, who had attempted to build a criminal case against Mr. Trump while working at the Manhattan district attorney\u2019s office several years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has taken aggressive measures to eliminate D.E.I. efforts \u2014 which he has called \u201cillegal and immoral discrimination\u201d programs \u2014 outside the legal profession, too. E.E.O.C. leaders have signaled recently that they would <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/newsroom\/president-appoints-andrea-r-lucas-eeoc-acting-chair\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">prioritize rooting out<\/a> \u201cDEI-motivated race and sex discrimination\u201d to comply with Mr. Trump\u2019s orders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a letter to Perkins Coie, Ms. Lucas requested more information on the firm\u2019s diversity fellowships, which she said might have \u201cpreviously limited participation by race\u201d or asked or required applicants to identify their race when applying. She also noted that the firm had several \u201cresource groups\u201d affiliated with certain races, religions or other characteristics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some employment experts said they were concerned about the agency\u2019s effort to scrutinize D.E.I. programs at law firms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe whole notion that D.E.I., as it\u2019s being vilified, is inherently discriminatory is absolutely, positively false,\u201d said David Lopez, who is a professor at Rutgers Law School and former general counsel at the E.E.O.C. under the Obama administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Lopez said that such programs were instead meant to help companies recruit from a broad pool of workers and ensure that \u201ceveryone who comes into the workplace has an opportunity to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The other firms that received letters were Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher &amp; Flom; Ropes &amp; Gray; A&amp;O Shearman; Debevoise &amp; Plimpton; Cooley; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; Goodwin Procter; Hogan Lovells; McDermott Will &amp; Emery; WilmerHale; Milbank; Morgan, Lewis &amp; Bockius; Morrison Foerster; Reed Smith; Simpson Thacher &amp; Bartlett; and White &amp; Case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The firms did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Officials at the employment commission said they also set up an email address, lawfirmDEI@eeoc.gov, that people can send information to about \u201cpotentially unlawful DEI practices at law firms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In addition to rooting out D.E.I.-related efforts, the agency, Ms. Lucas has said, would defend \u201cthe biological and binary reality of sex and related rights.\u201d In recent weeks, the commission has already <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/05\/business\/eeoc-trans-workers-discrimination.html\" title=\"\">moved to drop lawsuits<\/a> that accused various companies of subjecting transgender and nonbinary workers to hostile work environments and then often firing them when they complained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In January, Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/28\/business\/trump-eeoc-commissioners-fired.html\" title=\"\">fired two of the agency\u2019s<\/a> three Democratic commissioners, an act that leaves the agency without a quorum and limits its ability to take formal actions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion
