Tariffs\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-are-tariffs-trump-canada-mexico-what-to-know\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">are import taxes<\/a><\/span>\u00a0paid by companies such as Walmart and Target that are often passed onto consumers through higher prices.<\/p>\n<p>Those worries helped propel the U.S. stock market early last week into a correction, or\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/stock-today-trump-tariffs-3-13-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">plunge of 10%<\/a><\/span> or more from recent highs. But that rout is continuing to be reversed at least in part, with <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/stocks-up-tesla-stock-price-elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Wall Street on Monday rising<\/a><\/span> for a second consecutive session.<\/p>\n<p>The financial distress that many Americans are feeling was also illustrated by <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/retail-sales-rose-below-forecasts-in-february\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">disappointing retail sales<\/a><\/span> across the U.S. in February, rising just 0.2% after a number of major retailers warned of a slowdown in spending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dollar General issued a particularly heart-rendering SOS last week, with the discount retailer&#8217;s CEO telling Wall Street analysts that some of its shoppers could <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/dollar-general-economy-us-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">no longer afford
