President Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-25-percent-steel-aluminum-eu-retaliation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">increased tariffs<\/a><\/span> on all steel and aluminum imports to 25% on Wednesday, claiming they would help create U.S. factory jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The European Union quickly announced it would retaliate with steps that will take effect April 1.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. previously imposed levies of 25% on Canada and Mexico, which <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-canada-mexico-will-car-prices-increase-12000\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">automakers warned could drive up the cost of cars<\/a><\/span> by thousands of dollars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Trump has tapped Musk, the CEO of Tesla, to lead the White House&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, established to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-doge-elon-musk-findings-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">slash federal spending<\/a><\/span>, in part by culling the federal workforce.
