If confirmed, Oz would be the administrator charged with overseeing the nearly $1.5 trillion spent by the federal government on Medicare and Medicaid. The two health insurance programs for seniors and poor Americans make up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/60843\/html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than a third<\/a> of the budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/IF10885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Medicare<\/a> covers around 65 million people, through programs run directly by the federal government or contracted out to private insurers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/R43357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Medicaid<\/a> supports around 85 million, through programs administered primarily by state governments overseen by CMS.<\/p>\n<p>It will be up to Oz to finalize or abandon some major changes to Medicare and Medicaid sought by the Biden administration, like <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wegovy-ozempic-medicare-medicaid-biden-proposal\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a pricey proposal<\/a><\/span> in November to expand coverage to drugs used for weight loss like Wegovy and Ozempic.<\/p>\n<p>Oz is also expected to face questions over the significant authority he would wield over private health insurance as CMS administrator.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, CMS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/fact-sheets\/2025-marketplace-integrity-and-affordability-proposed-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">proposed<\/a> making several moves to reverse Biden administration expansions to the insurance marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act, like shortening the open enrollment period and excluding <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/daca-dreamers-obamacare-hundred-thousand\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">DACA recipients<\/a><\/span> from coverage. In 2022, Oz <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrOz\/status\/1522007605362798592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> that the law &#8220;caused havoc on our health care system&#8221; and that he &#8220;wouldn&#8217;t have voted for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oz will be the fourth of Trump&#8217;s health official picks to face questioning from senators. It comes a day after a hearing for Dr. David Weldon was abruptly canceled, after the White House <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/white-house-pulling-dave-weldon-nomination-cdc\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">withdrew his nomination<\/a><\/span> to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of senators on the Senate&#8217;s health committee advanced Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the president&#8217;s nominee to head the National Institutes of Health, and Dr. Marty Makary, the pick to head the Food and Drug Administration, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Oz&#8217;s potential new supervisor, Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was narrowly confirmed by the Senate a month ago.<\/p>\n<p>In social media posts last month, Oz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/droz\/posts\/pfbid0aynbf1y5ZKN3vqfbBwnzNRtBYQTSchkFf5iRnVkYd1BCXhhJGhnha11hGkmzesMrl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has touted<\/a> &#8220;great conversations&#8221; with key Republicans he would need to win over for his nomination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, the Republican chair of the Senate&#8217;s health committee, was among those to sit down with Oz last month. Cassidy is one of four medical doctors in the Senate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Great meeting with Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Trump&#8217;s nominee to lead the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services. It will be great to have a doctor in charge,&#8221; Cassidy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SenBillCassidy\/posts\/great-meeting-with-dr-mehmet-oz-president-trumps-nominee-to-lead-the-centers-for\/1160647905426441\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted<\/a> on Feb. 5.<\/p>\n<p>The president&#8217;s pick to head CMS has earned criticism from some Senate Democrats, who have cited Oz&#8217;s past embrace of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murray.senate.gov\/senator-murray-statement-on-trump-announcement-of-dr-oz-to-lead-cms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;alarming pseudoscience,&#8221;<\/a> record of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/warren-duckworth-press-trump-health-nominee-dr-oz-on-dangerous-anti-abortion-views\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">anti-abortion statements<\/a> and worries over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/ahead-of-hearing-warren-presses-dr-oz-key-trump-health-nominee-on-financial-conflicts-of-interests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">conflicts of interest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oz <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.columbia.edu\/article\/thats-healthfotainment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously worked<\/a> as a professor of cardiac surgery at Columbia University and host of &#8220;The Dr. Oz Show&#8221; until 2022, when he stopped taping new television episodes to run for a Senate seat in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>He lost that Senate race to Democrat John Fetterman, in a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/election-results-2022-oz-calls-fetterman-concedes-pa-senate-race\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">narrow contest<\/a><\/span> where abortion had ranked as a top issue for voters.<\/p>\n<p>As part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/extapps2.oge.gov\/201\/Presiden.nsf\/PAS+Index\/F871A5EF2296E46285258C3600320A25\/%24FILE\/Oz%2C%20Mehmet%20%20AMENDEDfinalEA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ethics agreement<\/a> published last month, Oz said he will resign from positions at several companies, including the nutritional supplement company iHerb and the drugmaker Housey Pharma. He also pledged to divest from several healthcare companies, including insurance giant UnitedHealth Group.<\/p>\n<p>After the Senate race, Oz had been advertised as iHerb&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iherb.com\/pressreleases\/dr-oz-announcement\/1805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">global advisor<\/a>. He continued to promote iHerb&#8217;s supplements <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1244628003512352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">on social media<\/a> after his nomination.<\/p>\n<p>He has also continued to republish past excerpts from his show in recent years after the Senate race, like a clip he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/droz\/posts\/pfbid02XdigweuQQjEJkrte6yR7qWFupvUayrqPby19BAsQHKk5kT5dKDzCiJxfSMxCZD3Vl?__cft__%5B0%5D=AZUKwGGUfvIYZhWj9UqeXMBIVyF3yJ2GW5tXaOaRsyQS_gpCQ-Zo_a3t2llixCuG5PfceaHl8y1fofzfHn9iLaGtCwwHbM_Q_WoT5tRvObbujUCF1tzx8-GcYUHPfVukG-LsHoHtuStnv7nofkyOjUDIBp5XhPqsV8WRJ1kf2ee9gQzfm0UlJJKyfYNz3hDXChY&amp;__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shared on Sept. 4<\/a> from a sponsored interview about Medicare Advantage coverage. In 2020, Oz would later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/steveforbes\/2020\/06\/11\/medicare-advantage-for-all-can-save-our-health-care-system\/?sh=7d3194b24d12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">propose<\/a> that Medicare Advantage should be expanded to all Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the clip, Oz said that enrollment in Medicare Advantage had grown 70% since he started his show. Just over <a href=\"https:\/\/data.cms.gov\/summary-statistics-on-beneficiary-enrollment\/medicare-and-medicaid-reports\/medicare-monthly-enrollment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">half of seniors<\/a> have opted for these plans, according to the latest federal data, instead of &#8220;original Medicare&#8221; coverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to nudge you. I don&#8217;t want to shove you.
