January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The collision between a military helicopter and an American Airlines plane <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/families-victims-washington-dc-plane-crash-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">left 67 people dead<\/a><\/span>. It was the first major commercial airline crash in the United States since 2009. The American Airlines flight, which was coming from Wichita, Kansas, was preparing to land at <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/faa-reagan-national-airport-runway-close-calls\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport<\/a><\/span>. The Army Black Hawk helicopter was on a training mission. Both fell into the Potomac River after the collision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal investigators have been working to\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/crash-reagan-national-airport-washington-dc\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">piece together the events<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that led to the crash. Investigators also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/all-3-black-boxes-recovered-after-midair-collision-near-reagan-national-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">recovered black boxes<\/a> from both aircraft. Black boxes record flight data, including altitude and speed, as well as audio from the flight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investigators <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/dc-plane-crash-black-hawk-crew-order-plane-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said in mid-February<\/a><\/span> that it&#8217;s possible the helicopter crew did not hear instructions from an air traffic controller to pass behind the plane. Seventeen seconds before the collision, a radio transmission from the air traffic control tower directed the helicopter to pass behind the airliner, but because the helicopter&#8217;s microphone key was pressed down during part of the transmission, they may have not heard the words &#8220;pass behind the,&#8221; NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NTSB has determined that the collision likely occurred at an altitude of about 325 feet, which would have put the Black Hawk above its 200-foot limit for the area. Cockpit conversations from a few minutes before the crash indicate conflicting altitude data.
