Other health agencies have also been operating without acting heads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Monarez is an unconventional pick to serve as the acting head of the CDC. Acting directors have historically been chosen from within the Atlanta-based agency, out of the ranks of career civil servants familiar with the CDC&#8217;s wide-ranging work.<\/p>\n<p>Past directors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/museum\/history\/pastdirectors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in recent history<\/a> have been medical doctors, while Monarez has a PhD. An acting director in the 1980s and 90s was also not a medical doctor, though he was a longtime <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DORp0XCeELQ?t=69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">career CDC official<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Monarez has served in various posts in the federal government over the years. She worked in the White House&#8217;s science and technology office <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/microsites\/ostp\/PCAST\/public_agenda_march_2015_pcast_mtg_v_3.23.15.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">under President Obama<\/a> and at the Department of Homeland Security <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/CDIR-2018-10-29\/pdf\/CDIR-2018-10-29-DEPARTMENTS-18.pdf#page=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">during the first Trump administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the agency&#8217;s line of succession, Dr. Nirav Shah had been expected to be next in line to lead the CDC in the event of the director&#8217;s vacancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the CDC&#8217;s principal deputy director, Shah had been closely involved in several of the agency&#8217;s most public responses, including fielding questions at regular press briefings on the unprecedented <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fda-cats-dead-sickened-bird-flu-raw-pet-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">bird flu<\/a><\/span> outbreak this past year. He was picked for the role in 2023 by a previous director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky.<\/p>\n<p>Another CDC civil servant who had been seen as a possible acting head of the agency had been Dr. Deb Houry. Currently the agency&#8217;s chief medical officer, Houry had been tasked with leading the transition team&#8217;s meetings with the incoming administration. She has worked at the CDC for a decade<\/p>\n<p>President Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-health-policy-rfk-weldon-bhattacharya-makary\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">has picked<\/a><\/span> former Congressman David Weldon to serve as his CDC director.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previous directors have been able to start soon after they were picked.
