But on Monday, shares in the company were down more than 15 percent for the day, and more than 50 percent from a mid-December peak, as investors registered the impact of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/05\/business\/tesla-germany-sales-elon-musk.html\" title=\"\">falling sales<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/08\/business\/elon-musk-tesla-violence-protests-vandalism.html\" title=\"\">angry protests<\/a> over the high-profile political role that Mr. Musk, who is also Tesla\u2019s chief executive, has taken on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Defending his political ally and key donor, Mr. Trump said in a post on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114141854575248527\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Truth Social<\/a> late Monday that Mr. Musk was doing a \u201cfantastic job,\u201d but argued that \u201cradical left lunatics\u201d were trying to boycott the vehicle manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIn any event, I\u2019m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American,\u201d he said. Mr. Musk <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1899316339522609235?s=46&amp;t=TkPT0i187CRttCQzV4qkXg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">thanked<\/a> the president in a post on social media and Tesla\u2019s share price was up slightly in premarket trading on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s defense of Tesla comes after an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/21\/business\/trump-ev-subsidies.html\" title=\"\">executive order<\/a> signed in January that, among other things, erased tax credits for electric vehicles, presenting a challenge to automakers that have invested billions of dollars in the industry. The president has previously said supporting the industry was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/111642745146668045\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201clunacy\u201d<\/a> but admitted last year that he would back the sector because of Mr. Musk\u2019s support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Investors had initially hoped that Mr. Musk\u2019s financial support for Mr. Trump\u2019s election campaign and his prominent role in the president\u2019s orbit would benefit Tesla, and sent its share price to record highs. But Mr. Musk\u2019s involvement in the administration has proved divisive, with some worrying that he has not been spending <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/20\/business\/elon-musk-tesla-trump.html\" title=\"\">enough time<\/a> managing the company when sales of its cars are dropping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Musk has drawn backlash for his deep cuts to federal agencies, led by the cost-cutting initiative he has called the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/28\/us\/politics\/musk-federal-bureaucracy-takeover.html\" title=\"\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a>.
