At least as far as I know.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Holt then\u00a0asked\u00a0Pezeshkian: \u201cYou\u2019re saying there was never an Iranian plot to kill Donald Trump?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cNone whatsoever,\u201d\u00a0Pezeshkian replied.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Asked whether Iran is willing to promise that there will be no attempt on\u00a0Trump\u2019s life, Pezeshkian\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cWe have never attempted this to begin with, and we never will.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The interview is Pezeshkian\u2019s first with foreign media since the U.S. presidential election.\u00a0It was conducted with a government interpreter present and translating in real time. NBC News reviewed the translation independently, and where there are discrepancies this article relies on the independent translation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In November, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/justice-department-brings-charges-thwarted-iranian-plot-assassinate-tr-rcna179342\" target=\"_blank\">Justice Department charged an Iranian man in an alleged\u00a0murder-for-hire effort<\/a> to kill Trump when he was the Republican presidential candidate. Two others were charged for allegedly planning to kill an Iranian American journalist and activist who has criticized the Iranian government over its treatment of\u00a0women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">U.S. authorities\u00a0said the\u00a0plot was part of Iran\u2019s efforts to avenge the death of a top Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in Baghdad in a U.S. drone strike Trump\u00a0ordered during\u00a0his first term in office. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In mid-October of last year,\u00a0Iran sent a written message via Swiss diplomats saying that it would not seek to kill\u00a0Trump, according to a U.S. official, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/iran-said-wont-try-kill-trump-us-official-rcna180409\" target=\"_blank\">NBC News has reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">U.S. and European governments say Iran for years has sought to silence Iranians abroad who have criticized the regime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The United Kingdom last year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-politics-united-kingdom-government-cc7868f857cca7c2c2927ec4643d6376\" target=\"_blank\">summoned<\/a>\u00a0Iran\u2019s top diplomat in London after Tehran targeted Iranian journalists based in Britain for intimidation. One journalist was stabbed in the leg in an attack blamed on Iran. Tehran denies the accusations.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">Past tensions with Trump<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">During Trump\u2019s first term in office, tensions between the United States and Iran spiked. In 2018, Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that limited the country\u2019s nuclear program in return for an easing of U.S. economic sanctions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Trump reimposed the sanctions and introduced additional punitive measures. The Biden administration then held indirect talks with Iran to try to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, but the discussions failed to produce an agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Pezeshkian, who has portrayed himself as a relative moderate, said Iran in principle is open to dialogue with the second Trump administration. But he said that the United States has not lived up to its commitments in the past and that it has sought to topple the Iranian government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe problem we have is not in dialogue,&#8221; Pezeshkian said. &#8220;It\u2019s in the commitments that arise from talk and dialogue that we\u2019ll have to commit to.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When Iran held talks with major powers about its nuclear program, \u201cwe upheld all the commitments that we had to commit to,\u201d he said. \u201cBut unfortunately it was the other party that did not live up to its promises and obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He added, \u201cWe have this doubt that, no matter how much we engage in conversation and dialogue, they are trying to\u00a0topple\u00a0the government, not solve the problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Since Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018, Iran has ignored its provisions, blocked some U.N. inspections and made advances in its uranium enrichment work. According to U.S. officials, Iran has dramatically increased its stockpile of enriched uranium and most likely has enough fissile material to make more than a dozen nuclear weapons if it decided to build an atomic arsenal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Trump\u2019s return to the White House and Iran\u2019s advancing nuclear program have prompted speculation that the United States and Israel might take military action to prevent Iran from building a nuclear bomb.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Pezeshkian said Iran is not seeking war but would be ready to defend itself if its nuclear sites came under attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou see, naturally enough, we will react to any action. We do not fear war, but we do not seek it,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cI solemnly hope that this will not transpire because it will be to the detriment of all the actors, not only and merely us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Pezeshkian said Iran\u2019s adversaries were accusing Tehran of trying to build the bomb \u201cto fabricate some sort of a pretext.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But he added, \u201cThis is not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">Recent Setbacks for Tehran<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Since Pezeshkian was elected in July, Iran has suffered a series of severe setbacks to its \u201caxis of resistance\u201d proxy network in the region. Israel\u2019s military has heavily damaged Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, and Hamas militants in the Gaza strip, the Assad regime in Syria \u2014 a close ally of Tehran\u2014 collapsed last month. And Israel has hit targets in Iran with apparent impunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But Pezeshkian denied Iran\u2019s position had been weakened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201c<\/em>I do not see any link,\u201d he said. He added that, \u201ccomparing to last year inside the country, we\u2019re more coherent. We\u2019re more robust. We have better participation.
