Wes Moore of Maryland, still bitter that the Baltimore Ravens quarterback had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6120405\/2025\/02\/06\/bills-josh-allen-2024-nfl-mvp-ravens-lamar-jackson\/\" title=\"\">fallen just short<\/a> of winning the N.F.L.\u2019s Most Valuable Player Award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe Sixers suck right now,\u201d declared Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, lamenting the decline of Philadelphia\u2019s basketball team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The hot takes are flowing as a parade of ambitious Democrats talk sports, trying to accentuate their salt-of-the-earth credentials and forge stronger bonds with voters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These Democrats are flocking to sports radio shows and podcasts as their party tries to correct for what it <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/13\/us\/politics\/trump-gen-z-influencers-democrats.html\" title=\"\">widely takes as an article of faith<\/a>: that President Trump won back power with help from young men who found themselves drawn to him through what was once an apolitical sphere of the media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As their party reels from the impact of Mr. Trump\u2019s policies and struggles to craft a new strategy and message, Democrats have found that yakking about sports is perhaps the easiest way to reach skeptical or disengaged audiences who might not otherwise want to spend time listening to a politician.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Moore is a regular caller on Baltimore and Washington sports radio, where last fall he predicted football winners on Friday afternoons. Lately, he has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6004756\/2024\/12\/18\/washington-commanders-maryland-rfk-stadium\/\" title=\"\">had a lot of thoughts<\/a> about where a proposed new Washington Commanders stadium should go. (Maryland, obviously.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Shapiro <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.audacy.com\/937thefan\/sports\/pitt-panthers\/governor-shapiro-joins-pitt-basketball-broadcast\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">served as a game analyst<\/a> for a University of Pittsburgh basketball broadcast last month. And Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky is already preparing to do the rounds of podcasts and shows at the Kentucky Derby this spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Voters, Mr. Beshear said, want<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>\u201ccandidates and people serving who don\u2019t just sound like normal human beings, but they are normal human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTalking about sports, going to watch sports and talking to people as you meet them about sports, just shows that you, too, are a normal human being,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These Democratic governors are broadening their outreach to voters at a political moment when Mr. Trump showed up at the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500 and is considering <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6172626\/2025\/03\/04\/pete-rose-hall-of-fame-explained\/\" title=\"\">a posthumous pardon for Pete Rose<\/a>, the baseball legend barred for betting on games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt takes the politics out of it,\u201d said Mr. Walz, whose career as a high school football coach was often highlighted after he became the Democratic nominee for vice president last year. \u201cWhen I go out there and go on those shows, it shows you\u2019re a real human being and it connects with people on something they care about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Certainly, Americans have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nysm.nysed.gov\/programs\/sports-and-identity-politics\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">long mixed sports and politics<\/a>, and many of these Democrats were talking sports well before the last election. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/pistons\/2021\/07\/30\/gretchen-whitmer-michigan-governor-detroit-pistons\/5428074001\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">once aspired<\/a> to be a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BsuJqfd2xcI\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sports broadcaster<\/a>, appeared on the \u201cLocked on Lions\u201d podcast <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/lockedonpodcasts.com\/michigan-governor-gretchen-whitmer-joins-locked-on-lions-to-discuss-detroit-hosting-2024-nfl-draft\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">last spring<\/a> to talk about the N.F.L. draft, which was held in Detroit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the post-election appearances have been especially striking, particularly because former Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on only a few sports shows during the fall campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Harris campaign tried but failed to have her appear on popular podcasts hosted by the sports commentator <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/22\/business\/media\/bill-simmons-the-ringer-black-employees.html\" title=\"\">Bill Simmons<\/a> and the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/28\/arts\/travis-jason-kelce-new-heights-podcast-wondery.html\" title=\"\">Kelce brothers of professional football<\/a>, according to a person who sought to arrange her media interviews. (The campaign also failed in its efforts to book her with the podcaster Joe Rogan and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/03\/arts\/television\/hot-ones-youtube-show.html\" title=\"\">the \u201cHot Ones\u201d YouTube show<\/a>, which interviews celebrities as they eat blisteringly spicy chicken wings.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent weeks, Democrats including Mr. Shapiro; Mr. Moore; Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader; former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York, who resigned in scandal and is now running for mayor of New York City; and Representative Ro Khanna of California have made time to chat with Stephen A. Smith, the ESPN personality. Mr. Smith, for his part, has espoused so many thoughts on politics lately that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/stephen-smith-now-boasts-d-180715056.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">his name has begun to show up<\/a> in fantasy 2028 Democratic presidential primary polling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Smith, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6181819\/2025\/03\/06\/stephen-a-smith-contract-espn-first-take\/?source=user_shared_article\" title=\"\">agreed last week to a $100 million contract<\/a> that allows him to delve more into politics, conferred instant sports credibility to Mr. Shapiro, seeming to compare him to the basketball superstar Michael Jordan. Mr. Smith also said he would be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/the-stephen-a-smith-show\/110124-interview-moore-sports\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">willing to campaign<\/a> for Mr. Moore.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For his part, Mr. Shapiro, who spoke with Mr. Smith before the Super Bowl, correctly predicted that his hometown Philadelphia Eagles would be able to contain the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And though Mr. Shapiro reveled in the Eagles\u2019 Super Bowl victory, his true sports passion is basketball. During a recent interview, he spoke at length about the aging and oft-injured roster of the Philadelphia 76ers, a team he said had failed to adapt to modern basketball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTeams that are trying to win with like a Big Two or <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/article\/2024\/jun\/19\/nba-playoffs-2024-highlights-talking-points\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Big Three<\/a>, as the Sixers attempted to do, aren\u2019t having as much success in the league right now,\u201d Mr. Shapiro said. \u201cThat\u2019s compounded when you have injuries that they do. It\u2019s really troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Shapiro\u2019s unsparing analysis of his 76ers would not be out of line on Philadelphia sports radio \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SportsRadioWIP\/status\/1889011231652221142?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1889011231652221142%7Ctwgr%5E98acc90c755d00be4ad3c8e728b7021d60bd52d8%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fawfulannouncing.com%2Fradio%2Fpennsylvania-governor-josh-shapiro-calls-94wip-eagles-super-bowl.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">to which he has been known to call in<\/a> as \u201cJosh in Abington,\u201d a reference to his hometown north of the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Speaking hard truths about hometown teams \u2014 and where one\u2019s loyalties lie \u2014 is a vehicle for politicians to convey authenticity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s very important for politicians \u2014 especially Democrats, if they want to try to reach the sports radio audience \u2014 they got to be who they are,\u201d said Matt Jones, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/23\/books\/review-mitch-mcconnell-matt-jones-mitch-please.html\" title=\"\">prominent sports radio host in Kentucky<\/a> who considered, but then decided against, a 2020 challenge to Senator Mitch McConnell, the former Republican leader. \u201cIn the sports world, people don\u2019t like fakes. They\u2019re fine with you not rooting for their team, but you better not lie about who you root for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Indeed, sports bigamy can exacerbate a politician\u2019s image as a flip-flopper \u2014 or worse, as someone willing to say whatever is expedient. Just ask Hillary Clinton, who at different times in her political life <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/24\/us\/politics\/hillary-clinton-cubs.html\" title=\"\">claimed to be a fan of both the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Holding true to one\u2019s sports loyalties can also backfire. Bill de Blasio <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/29\/nyregion\/its-baseball-season-and-mayor-de-blasio-is-in-his-element.html\" title=\"\">never gave up his Boston Red Sox allegiance<\/a>, which became a problem when he was mayor of New York. Chris Christie used to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/06\/nyregion\/all-atwitter-over-christies-love-of-dallas.html\" title=\"\">sit in the Dallas Cowboys owner\u2019s box<\/a> and cheer against the New York Giants and the Eagles \u2014 teams with huge followings in New Jersey, where he was governor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Moore presents himself as Maryland\u2019s No. 1 fan of the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles. But he is also upfront about being a convert. He spent part of his childhood in the Bronx during the New York Mets\u2019 glory years in the 1980s. In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1996\/06\/28\/sports\/on-basketball-no-longer-trapped-by-the-stuff-dreams-are-made-of.html\" title=\"\">a 1996 interview with The New York Times<\/a>, Mr. Moore said he dreamed of being drafted into the N.B.A. by the New York Knicks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a recent interview, Mr. Moore said he had given up most of his New York sports allegiances \u2014 except for the Knicks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe Mets are still kind of like, you know, your ex-girlfriend, who you\u2019re like, \u2018Yeah, that was fun back in the day,\u2019 but there is no doubt that I\u2019m married to the Orioles,\u201d Mr. Moore said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He also delivered a monologue lasting 1 minute 33 seconds about why Mr. Jackson should have been named the N.F.L.\u2019s most valuable player last year over Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills quarterback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But that argument is rejected by another prominent Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul of New York, according to her spokeswoman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Hochul, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/27\/nyregion\/hochul-buffalo-bills-fans.html\" title=\"\">Buffalo native and a Bills fanatic<\/a>, did her own round of sports podcast appearances during her team\u2019s playoff run in January.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou don\u2019t have to say, \u2018Hi\u2019 or \u2018Goodbye,\u2019\u201d she <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=46jtntoGgCc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told \u201cThe Buffalo Football Podcast.\u201d<\/a> \u201cYou just have to say, \u2018Go Bills.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In states without professional teams, governors tend to focus on college athletics. Gov.
