A winter of exceptionally heavy snow \u2014 some areas had more than 12 feet of snowpack this week \u2014 should be a skier or snowboarder\u2019s dream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The ski terrain in Japan this winter is \u201csuper big and super gnarly,\u201d the Austrian professional skier Tao Kreibich, 27, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T30l_y_cHN4\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in a video<\/a> about a recent backcountry excursion in the country. \u201cYou can do some crazy stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yes, but \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While many of Japan\u2019s 500 or so ski areas are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/11\/travel\/japan-skiing-guide.html\" title=\"\">having a banner season<\/a>, giant snowdrifts have led to challenges that have dented profits and raised safety concerns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHeavy snow is both a joy and a worry\u201d for resort workers, said Shinichi Imoto, a spokesman for Washigatake Ski Resort, which is seeing some of its largest drifts in a decade. \u201cThere are concerns if it doesn\u2019t fall, and concerns if it falls too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some resorts have had to close lifts to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1072162198282907&amp;set=a.471887291643737&amp;locale=ja_JP\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">give crews more time to shovel out<\/a>. Road closures have cut off access for would-be visitors. In some places, more skiers and snowboarders than usual have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asahi.com\/ajw\/articles\/15615826\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">gotten lost<\/a> in the backcountry or stuck in avalanches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Operations have returned to normal at many ski resorts across the country. But the effects of snowstorms last month \u2014 which led to school closures and the cancellation of trains and flights \u2014 are still being felt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At Kagura Ski Resort, a few hundred miles by road northeast of Washigatake, visitor numbers are down this year even though the snow has been good and plentiful, a spokesman, Kazuto Harasawa, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Unusually heavy snow forced the resort to close six times last month. The closure of a nearby highway, combined with the resort\u2019s mile-high elevation, did not help. \u201cWe are experiencing record-breaking snow and our staff is exhausted, so please understand,\u201d the resort <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/snowkagura\/posts\/pfbid0LBVyqu7H6yYCJxPJH7eMQukzdoZzi7MbxdXRJMoyVnXmqBqXSh1e2QU5EzPAYXjil?__cft__[0]=AZX93y9eVZwo4sUXe3RrYwnCB1lkw01YDLoPRGHieLlxqAm4OJmfbnceJTAL_Xa4tzMiL2CNGsdcOEcoHeDJiYQHY8AFLr6-pnEO1d4z-GGBiOILNnvE5YZgzG3FDdvk_X_6PkATWPDcvdkVix452hbcBecH9jrZSoxurjWCmhb_uTFHThSiQwFJ2OSFcQCgTWo&amp;__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said on social media<\/a> in late February.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The snow also forced Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort, about 12 miles by road from Kagura, to close for a day in late February \u2014 its first closure in more than 30 years of operation. A spokesman, Takashi Onozuka, described this season\u2019s snowfall, which is about two and a half times last year\u2019s, as \u201chonestly disaster level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Customers were pleased by the quality of the snow during a recent cold snap, he said, adding: \u201cIt\u2019s tough for the workers, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even if ski lifts, parking lots and other areas can be cleared, heavy snow presents safety risks on trails and in backcountry areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Crashes into trees tend to account for many of the skiing deaths in the United States, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nsaa.org\/webdocs\/Media_Public\/IndustryStats\/fatality_fact_sheet_2024.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to data from the National Ski Areas Association. Other causes of death include avalanches and falls into deep, loose snow around big trees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Japan, the northern island of Hokkaido had reported 28 cases of people being stranded in the mountains while backcountry skiing as of late January, more than twice as many as the previous season, according to the local police. That data was compiled before early February, when Obihiro, a city in the southern part of Hokkaido, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20250204_21\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">received 50 inches of snow<\/a> over 12 hours, a national record.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kreibich, the Austrian skier, knows a little about the risks of skiing off piste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He and a cameraman, Gabriel Koschier, 28, flew to Japan on a whim in early February because the snow in the Alps wasn\u2019t particularly good at the time. They headed to a resort in the Hakuba Valley that had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/venues-overview-ioc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">hosted events<\/a> for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They took a lift to the resort\u2019s highest point and hiked uphill for an hour, searching for pristine backcountry terrain. \u201cEven though I\u2019m chasing snow all over the world, I think I\u2019ve never seen so much snow anywhere,\u201d he said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though the sun was shining and the powder was exceptional, Mr. Kreibich and Mr. Koschier began to see cracks in the snowpack as they glided over a windswept, nearly treeless ridgeline. Mr. Kreibich said he also noticed that the snow under his feet felt \u201ca little weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then Mr. Koschier slid nearly 1,000 feet in an avalanche. He survived, shaken but uninjured.
