The difference largely depends on what economic climate the borrower is in at the time of application. In recent years, for example, homeowners were often better served by pursuing <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-a-home-equity-loan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">home equity loans<\/a><\/span> instead of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-a-heloc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">home equity lines of credit (HELOCs)<\/a><\/span>. While the former may have had a slightly higher <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/todays-home-equity-loan-heloc-interest-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">interest rate<\/a><\/span>, that rate was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-to-decide-fixed-or-variable-rate-home-equity-loan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">fixed<\/a><\/span>, which was an advantage in a rising interest rate atmosphere. Then they hit an 18-month low in January, a two-year low in February and then <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/heloc-rates-fell-again-what-homeowners-should-do-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">dropped again this week<\/a><\/span>, where they now hover just over 8%. Combined with the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/whats-the-average-home-equity-amount-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">average home equity amount<\/a><\/span> sitting around $313,000 now, borrowing from it with a HELOC makes financial sense. But it&#8217;s important to understand, in advance, what those costs may be, even if you&#8217;re taking out a smaller amount of $60,000. By being aware of these potential repayment costs, homeowners can better ensure long-term borrowing success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, how much does a $60,000 HELOC cost monthly in the interest rate climate of 2025? Here&#8217;s what they would look like if today&#8217;s rates fell by another 25 basis points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>10-year HELOC at 7.81%: <\/strong><\/strong>$721.96 per month<\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>15-year HELOC at 7.81%: <\/strong><\/strong>$566.83 per month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here&#8217;s what they&#8217;d be if today&#8217;s rates drop by a half percentage point:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>10-year HELOC at 7.56%: <\/strong><\/strong>$714.09 per month<\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>15-year HELOC at 7.56%: <\/strong><\/strong>$558.26 per month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not only are HELOC monthly repayments relatively inexpensive now, but they could become even cheaper if current market conditions persist.
