Here&#8217;s a look at when exactly we &#8220;<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/daylight-saving-time-fall-back-seasonal-affective-disorder-expert-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">spring forward<\/a><\/span>&#8221; and how daylight saving time works.<\/p>\n<h2>What time exactly does the time change for daylight saving 2025?<\/h2>\n<p>The time change will take place at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, moving ahead to 3 a.m.<\/p>\n<h2>How does the time change work in the spring?<\/h2>\n<p>In the spring, the clocks move forward one hour, meaning the sun sets an hour later in the evening and rises an hour later in the morning.   <\/p>\n<p>Digital clocks like the ones on cellphones will automatically change. Analog clocks and any clocks that do not automatically adjust will need to be reset manually.<\/p>\n<p>With the change, we lose an hour of sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>When does daylight saving time end in the fall?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-daylight-saving-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Daylight saving time<\/a><\/span> ends this year on Sunday, Nov. 2, when clocks will &#8220;<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/daylight-saving-time-fall-back-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">fall back<\/a><\/span>&#8221; one hour. With that change, the sun will set an hour earlier in the evening and rise an hour earlier in the morning.  <\/p>\n<h2>Which countries do daylight saving time outside of the U.S.?<\/h2>\n<p>Outside the U.S., most of the countries that observe daylight saving time are in Europe, where it&#8217;s common, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/10\/26\/most-countries-dont-observe-daylight-saving-time\/sr_23-10-26_timezones_1-png\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>. France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are among the countries where it&#8217;s practiced.<\/p>\n<p>Daylight saving time is also observed in some parts of Canada and Australia. In Africa, Egypt is the only country to observe it.<\/p>\n<h2>Which U.S. states don&#8217;t do daylight saving time?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/states-without-daylight-saving-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Hawaii and most of the state of Arizona<\/a><\/span> do not observe daylight saving time, according to the Department of Transportation, which oversees time zones in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Daylight saving time is also not observed in the U.S. territories of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>American Samoa<\/li>\n<li>Guam<\/li>\n<li>Northern Mariana Islands<\/li>\n<li>Puerto Rico<\/li>\n<li>U.S. Virgin Islands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Who invented daylight saving time?<\/h2>\n<p>Some have said Benjamin Franklin <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/why-was-daylight-saving-time-started-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">started the practice<\/a><\/span> in 1784. He wrote a satirical essay for the Journal de Paris proposing regulations to ensure early risers.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia&#8217;s Franklin Institute, however,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fi.edu\/en\/science-and-education\/benjamin-franklin\/daylight-savings-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disputes<\/a>\u00a0the claim, and looks to New Zealand entomologist George Hudson, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/state-legislatures-news\/details\/a-bugologist-and-a-golfer-sparked-the-push-for-daylight-saving-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">proposed\u00a0<\/a>a two-hour clock rollback in 1895. The suggestion was inspired by his passion for collecting bugs, as he wanted more light after work to gather insects.<\/p>\n<p>Still others credit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nms.ac.uk\/explore-our-collections\/stories\/science-and-technology\/the-waste-of-daylight\/#:~:text=It%20was%20William%20Willett%20who,to%20GMT%20in%20the%20autumn.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">British builder William Willet<\/a>, who wrote a pamphlet in 1907 that encouraged moving clocks forward in the spring so that people could get out of bed earlier. Lighter and longer days were supposed to save energy, reduce the number of traffic accidents and help people be more active.<\/p>\n<p>In 1916, during World War I, Germany became the first country to practice daylight saving time to conserve fuel, according to the Congressional Research Service. Other European countries soon followed, and the U.S. started practicing daylight saving time in 1918 to add additional daylight hours and help conserve energy.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s practice of starting daylight saving time on the second Sunday in March each year and ending it on the first Sunday in November was enacted under former President George W.
