href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-measles-mmr-vaccine-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">measles<\/a><\/span> after their death, health officials announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The New Mexico Department of Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmhealth.org\/news\/alert\/2025\/3\/?view=2188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that the official cause of death is still under investigation, and the individual did not seek medical care before they died.<\/p>\n<p>There has not been a measles death in New Mexico in at least 40 years, according to a spokesperson for the New Mexico Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p>The deceased New Mexico resident who tested positive for measles lived in Lea County, which is just over the border from Gaines County, Texas, where a measles outbreak that is still underway has mainly been concentrated.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-death-texas-outbreak\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">first measles-related death<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from that outbreak was reported on Feb. 26 after a child in West Texas who was hospitalized due to the illness died. The Texas outbreak is primarily affecting <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/vaccination-rate-decline-measles-polio-outbreaks\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">children and teenagers<\/a><\/span>, nearly all of whom were <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-texas-preventable-symptoms\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">unvaccinated<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The largest outbreak so far this year has been in <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-us-map\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">West Texas<\/a><\/span>, where 159 cases have been identified since late January, with 22 of those patients requiring hospitalization, according to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services.
