His podcast and radio show will end production on March 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The job, which does not require Senate confirmation, has traditionally been filled by a senior agent with vast operational experience and a deep understanding of how the bureau\u2019s various divisions work. The last two deputy directors together had more than 35 years of experience before they assumed the role. Mr. Bongino served as a police officer and<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>a U.S. Secret Service agent years ago, but has no experience with the F.B.I.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino\u2019s precise plans for the agency remain opaque, but on recent podcasts he has said he would rid the agency of politicization and focus on crimes like drug dealing \u2014 despite the bureau\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/doj\/federal-bureau-investigation#:~:text=Protect%20the%20U.S.%20from%20terrorist,public%20corruption%20at%20all%20levels\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">broad mandate<\/a> to protect national security, investigate crimes and root out <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/investigate\/public-corruption\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">corruption by public officials<\/a> at all levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Taken together, Mr. Bongino\u2019s years of comments on his radio show and podcast have painted a vision for \u201cdramatic change\u201d at the F.B.I., as he put it last week. Those ideas largely align with criticisms put forth by his friend <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/topic\/kashyap-patel\" title=\"\">Kash Patel<\/a>, who was recently confirmed as the director of the agency. Some of their ideas, however, would probably require additional funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The F.B.I. declined to comment, but it recently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/14\/us\/politics\/fbi-kristi-noem-dhs.html\" title=\"\">rejected charges of \u201ccorruption\u201d<\/a> leveled by a Republican cabinet secretary, saying such claims are not \u201csupported by any evidence\u201d and \u201cundermine the men and women of the F.B.I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Responding during his radio show Wednesday to questions sent by The New York Times, Mr. Bongino said: \u201cIt\u2019s my job to produce political opinions.\u201d He added: \u201cYour political opinions aren\u2019t a prerequisite for a job like that, obviously. My law enforcement experience was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s what Mr. Bongino has said in the past about his vision for the F.B.I.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6a501dc7\">Fire \u2018everyone\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino has frequently focused on F.B.I. officials who, in his mind, showed disloyalty to Mr. Trump by pursuing investigations against him or his supporters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHow do we fix this? We fire everyone who stood by,\u201d he said in June 2023 after Mr. Trump was indicted on a charge of mishandling documents. \u201cWe don\u2019t just fire the people who did this. Everyone who stood by and did nothing while the Department of Justice and the F.B.I. have been ravaged, ravaged by corrupt crowds. Everyone gets fired. Everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Republicans and Mr. Trump\u2019s allies have tried to downplay charges against Mr. Trump by claiming some investigations by the F.B.I. were little more than a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The indictment on mishandling documents centered on Mr. Trump\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/12\/15\/us\/mar-a-lago-trump-documents.html\" title=\"\">storing classified documents<\/a> in multiple rooms at Mar-a-Lago, including a shower. The investigation was started by the F.B.I. in 2022 but was ultimately taken over by an independent special counsel. The charges were dismissed after Mr. Trump\u2019s re-election, because Justice Department policy prohibits indicting and prosecuting a sitting president.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-651bbd4a\">Restructure the F.B.I.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On past shows, Mr. Bongino endorsed Mr. Patel\u2019s suggestions that the F.B.I. was bloated and that its agents in Washington should be dispersed throughout the country to fight crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe corruption needs to be immediately defunded,\u201d he said during a show in June 2023. \u201cThe F.B.I. should no longer exist as it\u2019s constituted now. The mission should be divvied up. The money should be divvied up amongst other agencies that take the oath to their country seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Patel has already started to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/21\/us\/politics\/kash-patel-fbi-staff-transfer.html\" title=\"\">make good on some of those promises<\/a>. He announced in February plans to move about 1,500 agents and others from the Washington region to field offices and other facilities around the country.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5ff585cf\">Expose the F.B.I.\u2019s \u2018cover-ups\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino has claimed the F.B.I. knows the truth about various mysteries that have animated right-wing influencers for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among them is the mystery surrounding two pipe bombs that were planted outside the headquarters of both political parties in Washington <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/video-repository\/january-5-pipe-bomb-investigation-new-footage-of-suspect-placing-bomb-at-dnc\/view\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the day before<\/a> Mr. Trump\u2019s rally on Jan. 6, 2021. The bombs never exploded, and it remains a mystery who planted them, though the F.B.I. released <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/02\/us\/politics\/fbi-capitol-riot-pipe-bomb-suspect.html\" title=\"\">new details about the case<\/a> in January, including new surveillance video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino has said the F.B.I. tried to cover up the crime in what he called the \u201cbiggest scandal in F.B.I. history.\u201d Citing no evidence, he has said that F.B.I. officials know the identity of the bomber and that they are keeping it secret to protect Democrats or government insiders. Former F.B.I. officials who worked the case said that was false.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He has said the F.B.I.\u2019s next leaders need to \u201cget to the story on Day 1 and re-establish trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is absolutely crystal clear to me that this was an inside job,\u201d he said about the bombs during a broadcast in November. \u201cI don\u2019t necessarily mean inside government. Could be. But there\u2019s zero doubt in my mind that this was not a MAGA person that planted that bomb. This was an anti-Trump lunatic, and the F.B.I. knows who it is and they will not tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3c66cd1d\">End \u2018politicized\u2019 investigations \u2026<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino has said Trump supporters were unfairly targeted by the F.B.I. when it investigated crimes committed on Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re not investigating bad guys because we\u2019re wasting F.B.I., H.S.I. and D.O.J. time investigating who? MAGA and Christian nationalists,\u201d he said in November 2023, referring to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/about-ice\/hsi\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Homeland Security Investigations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">What really happened: The F.B.I. investigated people based on evidence that they had committed crimes such as entering the U.S. Capitol illegally, assaulting police officers or engaging in seditious conspiracy. During the sentencings of a handful of defendants, federal prosecutors asked for what is known as a terrorism enhancement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Christopher A. Wray, who stepped down as F.B.I. director before Mr. Trump took office, has described the attack, in which supporters of Mr. Trump ransacked the Capitol, resulting in five deaths and scores of injuries to police officers, as domestic terrorism. Mr. Wray was confirmed during Mr. Trump\u2019s first administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the same time, Mr. Bongino has suggested that the F.B.I. should focus on other violent offenses like drug dealing, even though the F.B.I. is in charge of investigating any violation of federal law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI actually think the intelligence function should be removed from the F.B.I. completely,\u201d Mr. Bongino said in November last year. \u201cThey should go back to bank robbery investigations, kidnapping, serious stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The F.B.I. has not abandoned those pursuits. The agency\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recent announcements<\/a> include arrests related to an attack by the Islamic State, a string of A.T.M. robberies in New York and money laundering in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-48644315\">\u2026 and potentially start investigations against Democrats.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino has claimed for years that progressive leaders, including former President Joseph R. Biden Jr., have committed crimes, and has said leaders at the F.B.I. should be investigated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen Kash Patel goes in there, I think many of these people involved should be investigated,\u201d he said in January about his belief that the F.B.I. played a role in the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. \u201cIf there were crimes committed, prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/oig.justice.gov\/news\/doj-oig-releases-report-fbis-handling-its-confidential-human-sources-and-intelligence\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> last year, the Department of Justice found<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>\u201cno evidence\u201d that the F.B.I. had \u201cundercover employees in the various protest crowds, or at the Capitol, on Jan. 6.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino has echoed Republican claims that the F.B.I. and the Department of Justice were weaponized against conservatives and wants to turn those agencies on left-wing Americans \u2014 even though the bureau has a long history of investigating Democrats. In a show that aired in January, Mr. Bongino suggested they would use the government to go after lawbreakers in a tit-for-tat response to what he claimed Democrats had done.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey weaponized the government to go after Trump for charges they fabricated,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are going to use the government to go after people we believe legitimately broke the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bongino seemed to recognize concerns that he would politicize the F.B.I., responding on his podcast that doing so was the last thing on his mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re there for the opposite reason,\u201d he said. \u201cTo make sure none of that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\"
