They threw together a website so rudimentary, initially, that visitors had to type the \u201cwww\u201d manually, or else the web address raised an error. Within days, the (improved) site received so much traffic that it crashed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The event, dubbed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/standupforscience2025.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Stand Up For Science<\/a>, is something of a revitalization of the March for Science that took place in cities around the world in April 2017, not long into President Trump\u2019s first term. But this time, in a greatly sharpened political climate and a post-Covid world, the protests are being organized by a completely different team, and with a distinct vision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe spirit of it is the same,\u201d Ms. Delawalla said. But, she added, \u201cnow we are in a position of being on defense as opposed to offense.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many of the threats that mobilized scientists during the first Trump administration, such as the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/agenda\/story\/2017\/07\/25\/what-happened-trump-war-data-000481\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">widespread deletion of federal databases<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/11\/science\/science-research-budget-astronomy.html\" title=\"\">deep slashes to the science budget<\/a>, never came to pass. But this time, within weeks of the presidential inauguration, Mr. Trump has already reshaped much of the federal scientific enterprise, which funds a significant chunk of academic research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Often through <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/20\/us\/politics\/trump-executive-orders-list.html\" title=\"\">executive orders<\/a>, his administration has terminated funding for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/27\/health\/usaid-contract-terminations.html\" title=\"\">global health programs<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/19\/health\/trump-border-health-inspections.html\" title=\"\">fired disease screeners<\/a> at the nation\u2019s borders, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/02\/climate\/trump-us-climate-policy-changes.html\" title=\"\">gutted climate policy<\/a> and attempted to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/28\/us\/politics\/trump-iron-dome.html\" title=\"\">suspend funding for nuclear protection<\/a>. More than a thousand workers across federal science agencies, including the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/01\/us\/national-parks-trump-protests.html\" title=\"\">National Park Service<\/a>, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, have been laid off. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., widely seen as a vaccine skeptic, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/13\/us\/rfk-jr-hhs-senate-confirmation.html\" title=\"\">is now the health secretary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some scientific associations applauded Mr. Trump\u2019s swift appointment of Michael Kratsios, an expert in technology policy, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/29\/science\/trump-science-advisor-michael-kratsios.html\" title=\"\">to the position of science adviser<\/a>, rather than leaving the position vacant for more than a year, as he did during his first term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, the barrage of changes landed as \u201cgut punches,\u201d Ms. Delawalla said. On that Saturday morning in February \u2014 her coffee growing cold as she doomscrolled on her phone \u2014 Ms. Delawalla was drawn to her bathroom mirror, where she contemplated her reflection with resolve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAre you somebody who lives by your values?\u201d she asked herself. \u201cIf I really believe as a scientist that science is important for America, what am I going to do about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1d1aa5b9\">Marching for Science<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tradition of science activism stretches back through the environmental movement of the 1960s to the antinuclear protests at the end of World War II. \u201cHistorically, when scientists\u2019 interests and livelihoods are threatened, they mobilize,\u201d said Scott Frickel, a sociologist at Brown University <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/science-activism-is-surging-which-marks-a-culture-shift-among-scientists-207454\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">who studies the relationship between science and society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the March for Science in 2017, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/22\/science\/march-for-science.html\" title=\"\">attracted an estimated one million people to protests in cities around the world<\/a>, was distinct from past movements, Dr. Frickel said, because it was in reaction to a specific presidential administration, not to U.S. policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some scientists worried that taking that step would heighten the perception of science as partisan. In 2017, Robert Young, a geologist at Western Carolina University, published <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/31\/opinion\/a-scientists-march-on-washington-is-a-bad-idea.html\" title=\"\">an essay in The Times<\/a> expressing concerns about the march. \u201cThose who want to characterize scientists as just another political interest group will use that as evidence for that case,\u201d he said recently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A growing body of evidence suggests that scientists and scientific institutions engaging in political action does affect the way they are perceived by the public. One <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41562-023-01537-5\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> found that trust in scientists among supporters of Mr. Trump declined after Nature, a prominent scientific journal, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-02852-x\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed<\/a> Joe Biden for president in 2020. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/ps-political-science-and-politics\/article\/abs\/polarizing-effect-of-the-march-for-science-on-attitudes-toward-scientists\/CCF0C31AE01CF32985310522608BD463\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Another<\/a> concluded that conservative attitudes toward scientists became more negative, and liberal attitudes more positive, as a direct consequence of the March for Science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The organization held additional marches in 2018 and 2019, but they drew much smaller crowds. The movement ultimately fizzled, in part because of competing perspectives among a diffuse set of leaders about what structure the organization should take, what goals it should tackle next and the politicization of science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eight years later, Jonathan Berman, one of the leaders of the March for Science in 2017, said that the Trump administration had \u201cmoved from the theoretical to the experimental in terms of direct attacks on science.\u201d Dr. Berman also expressed mixed feelings about the legacy of the movement that took place during Mr. Trump\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere are some things I wish I had done differently,\u201d he said, like leading with an explicit mission and policy goals, meeting with members of Congress and a having clearer message about the political nature of science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI would have more regrets if they hadn\u2019t started organizing this,\u201d Dr. Berman said, referring to the new movement. \u201cThey\u2019ve indicated to me that it opened the door for a way of seeing the \u2018scientist-activist\u2019 as a kind of scientist you can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-444b9c9b\">\u2018Everything Is Political\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of Mr. Trump\u2019s executive orders in particular struck a chord for Ms. Delawalla: the removal of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/09\/science\/trump-dei-science.html\" title=\"\">diversity, equity, inclusion<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/22\/science\/trump-accessibility-research.html\" title=\"\">accessibility<\/a> programs across the government, many of which supported the work of scientists from historically underrepresented backgrounds. That mandate led the National Science Foundation to review currently awarded grants that contained certain words commonly associated with those programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201c\u2018Woman\u2019 and \u2018female\u2019 were on that list,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were my words. I\u2019m a woman. I\u2019m female.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Delawalla had little experience in political activism. Through Bluesky, she connected with four other researchers, and together they formed Stand Up for Science. Those scientists were Sam Goldstein, a graduate student studying women\u2019s health at the University of Florida; Emma Courtney, a graduate student studying disease at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York; Leslie Berntsen, a psychologist based in Los Angeles; and JP Flores, a Ph.D. student in bioinformatics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who had already been gathering organizing tips from the 2017 march leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Stand Up for Science is distinct from its 2017 inspiration. The team is small, and the members share a consistent vision, with similar views about how to achieve it. The website lays out a clear set of policy demands, including the expansion of science funding, the restoration of public access to scientific information and the reinstatement of dismissed federal scientists. They chose to protest on a Friday when the U.S. Senate is in session, because they have a clearly defined target audience: American policymakers. And there is no question among the organizers about the political nature of science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEverything is political,\u201d Dr. Berntsen said. \u201cWe did not get to the current moment by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But in their movement\u2019s tagline, the group also emphasizes that the benefits of science extend across the political aisle: \u201cScience is for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe law of gravity works for you, regardless of who you voted for,\u201d Ms. Delawalla said. If you used your cellphone today, or knew the name of a bird outside your window or brushed your teeth last night, she added, \u201cit\u2019s because of a scientist.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since Feb. 8, Stand Up For Science has amassed more than 50,000 followers on Bluesky, has been endorsed by Hank Green, the popular science YouTuber, and recognized by Mark Cuban. Volunteers have organized satellite protests in more than 30 cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The organizing team filed a protest permit in Washington for a crowd of up to 10,000 on Friday afternoon, although they aren\u2019t sure how many people will show up. That event has attracted speakers such as Bill Nye the Science Guy; Gretchen Goldman, the president of the Union of Concerned Scientists; and Francis Collins, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/01\/us\/politics\/francis-collins-nih-retires.html\" title=\"\">recently retired leader<\/a> of the National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe are standing up for science because we feel like our backs are against the wall,\u201d Mr. Flores said. \u201cMarch 7 is not the end goal for us. It\u2019s the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
