<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-stock-market-impact-on-your-401k-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Trump administration tariffs<\/a><\/span> on Canada, China and Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 fell 83 points, or 1.4%, to 5,759 point shortly after the start of trade, while the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrials Average slid 1.2% and tech-heavy Nasdaq composite tumbled 1.7%.<\/p>\n<p>Recent signals suggest the economy is weakening. Most worrying is a downturn in spending by American consumers, with federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/retail\/sales.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data<\/a> showing that retail sales across the U.S. dipped 0.9% in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The job market is also <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jobs-report-january-2025-unemployment-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cooling down<\/a><\/span>, while layoffs in February <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/layoffs-job-cuts-highest-since-2020-doge-economy-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">soared to their highest level<\/a><\/span> since July 2020, according to new numbers from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, inflation <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-january-inflation-what-it-means-for-your-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">accelerated in January<\/a><\/span> and remains stubbornly above the Federal Reserve&#8217;s 2% annualized target. Recent economic trends have sparked fears that the U.S. could be headed for a rare bout of &#8220;stagflation,&#8221; or when the economy and the job market slow at the same time inflation rises. The country hasn&#8217;t faced such a period of economic distress since the late 1970s and early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Investors are also fretting about a budding global trade war. The Trump administration on Tuesday <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-what-will-cost-more-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">announced 25% tariffs<\/a><\/span> on U.S. imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as an additional 10% levy on Chinese imports, which were already taxed at 10%.
