The California Academy of Sciences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calacademy.org\/press\/releases\/california-academy-of-sciences-describes-138-new-species-in-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said their scientists made findings<\/a> across six continents and three oceans, which led to describing 138 new animal, plant and fungi species.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Finding and describing new species is vital for understanding the biodiversity of our planet and protecting it from further loss,&#8221; said virologist Shannon Bennett, chief of science for the California Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The number of new species identified in 2024 cannot be tallied or determined by one list. Researchers present their findings in various papers, conferences and among the scientific community. Inclusion is made tricker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/stories\/234-new-species-discovered-in-the-greater-mekong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">because discoveries can be made by anyone, anywhere, but describing and identifying a new species<\/a> requires a scientific process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That process involves study and analysis of the new specimen and similar organisms, and then assigning the species a new name. The soft-furred hedgehog with fang-like teeth inspired its scientific name. Abramov<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>First photographed in 2009 in the wild in Vietnam by a team from the Russian Vietnamese Research Centre, the vampire hedgehog was identified as a new species as part of an international effort to revise the taxonomy of lesser gymnures, the WWF said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Specimens that helped lead to the description of the vampire hedgehog were housed in the Smithsonian, researcher Arlo Hinckley told WWF. He stressed the importance of maintaining collected specimens from &#8220;poorly sampled regions&#8221; in order for &#8220;the next generation&#8221; of researchers to make new discoveries that may have been overlooked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Pygmy pipehorse, found off the coast of South Africa<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers at the California Academy of Scientists knew they might discover something new after local divers in South Africa&#8217;s Sodwana Bay told them about an unfamiliar species. Originally the pygmy pipehorse was found in the cool temperate waters surrounding the North Island of New Zealand. Discovering a new species in subtropical waters expanded the range of the group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Luckily we spotted a female camouflaged against some sponges about a mile offshore on the sandy ocean floor,&#8221; Smith said in the news release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They named the new pygmy pipehorse species <a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/ichthyology-and-herpetology\/volume-112\/issue-3\/i2023053\/A-New-Record-and-Species-of-Pygmy-Pipehorse-of-the\/10.1643\/i2023053.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>C. nkosi<\/em><\/a>, after the local Zulu word for &#8220;chief,&#8221; the academy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Blob-headed&#8221; fish baffles researchers<\/h2>\n<p>Among eight new species of fish identified in Peru&#8217;s Alto Mayor region this year, the most shocking was the &#8220;blob-headed fish,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/press-releases\/2024\/12\/20\/27-new-species-including-four-mammals-discovered-in-human-dominated-peruvian-rainforest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a> a report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/docs\/default-source\/publication-pdfs\/rap-73-alto-mayo-peru.pdf?sfvrsn=e66add1e_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published<\/a> this month by the nonprofit group Conservation International. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 2022, researchers with the group&#8217;s Rapid Assessment Program conducted a biological survey across a largely unstudied area in Alto May&#8217;s central region and found what was later determined to be at least 27 species new to science and 49 species that are threatened with extinction, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IUCN Red List<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\"><span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2024\/12\/28\/fffbf8b5-fa4f-4c7b-ade7-9611cc12cfd5\/thumbnail\/620x413\/aa470571ae5967c1e37863ffb9d55546\/ci-85211713.jpg?v=e306e7b9fefc168c00baa623d76d1eaf#\" alt=\"ci-85211713.jpg \" height=\"413\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2024\/12\/28\/fffbf8b5-fa4f-4c7b-ade7-9611cc12cfd5\/thumbnail\/620x413\/aa470571ae5967c1e37863ffb9d55546\/ci-85211713.jpg?v=e306e7b9fefc168c00baa623d76d1eaf 1x, https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2024\/12\/28\/fffbf8b5-fa4f-4c7b-ade7-9611cc12cfd5\/thumbnail\/1240x826\/420af7314c7fdd396567cf8e4dd31baa\/ci-85211713.jpg?v=e306e7b9fefc168c00baa623d76d1eaf 2x\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg'%20viewBox%3D'0%200%20620%20413'%2F%3E\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><span class=\"embed__caption\">This &#8216;blob-headed&#8217; fish (Chaetostoma sp.) is also new to science and was a shocking discovery due to its enlarged blob-like head, a feature that the fish scientists have never seen before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Robinson Olivera\/Conservation International<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among those that were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/stories\/new-discoveries-in-a-changing-landscape-uncovering-alto-mayos-hidden-biodiversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new<\/a> was a &#8220;blob-headed fish&#8221; in the <em>Chaetostoma<\/em>\u00a0genus, which includes bristlemouth armored catfish.
