As of Thursday afternoon, he held a lead of 1,813 votes over Ms. Hyde-Smith, a Republican serving her first term.<\/p>\n<div id=\"_R_1r6j7aq_\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">In an election when Democrats broke through conservative strongholds to gain majorities in the House and Senate, Mississippi and <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/11\/05\/us\/alaska-ranked-choice-data-sullivan-peltola.html\" title=\"\">Alaska<\/a> are the only remaining states where the Senate races do not yet have a clear victor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">That there is suspense at all in Mississippi, which has not sent a Democrat to the Senate in more than four decades, has stunned Democrats and Republicans.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-large css-hxpw2c e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-1jme789 ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-1y6rqsj e13ogyst0\">Scott Colom, a Democratic district attorney, in Jackson, Miss., on Thursday.<\/span><span class=\"css-3hmc0r e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"iqSOia_accessibilityLabel\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Rory Doyle for The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m glad that the country is starting to see what Mississippi values look like and what Mississippi\u2019s potential is,\u201d said Mr. Colom, as he spoke to reporters in Jackson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">On social media, Ms. Hyde-Smith\u2019s campaign <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cindyhydesmith\/status\/2118443501893640467\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said she would remain in the Senate<\/a>, given that \u201cwe believe thousands of votes remain to be counted from dozens of Republican counties, and we are confident those votes will reinforce her path to victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The outcome of the race appears to hinge on what the state has said is an unknown number of affidavit ballots, cast by voters who were either listed as inactive or without proper identification. On Thursday, Michael Watson, the secretary of state, said roughly 3,300 absentee-by-mail ballots were also still outstanding. To count, they must be received within five business days of Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">He did not provide a number for the uncounted affidavit ballots, but said that 6,936 affidavit ballots had been processed. The deadline for counties to certify their election results to the state is Nov. 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Unlike most states, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/11\/04\/us\/mississippi-senate-election-recount-law.html\" title=\"\">Mississippi law does not allow for a recount of votes<\/a> in a statewide election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">In Jackson, the state capital, on Thursday, lawyers, reporters, poll watchers and, at one point Mr. Colom\u2019s wife, milled among the tables in the cramped Hinds County Election Commission headquarters. The commission members had been going through ballots since 7 a.m., working steadily but with little acknowledgment of the intense national scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">\u201cI hope they put a pep in their step,\u201d said June Hardwick, a lawyer who supported the Colom campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Jermal Clark, one of the commissioners, said they had to ensure that they were being thorough and that they were following the law. \u201cTo me, everything is going well,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just congested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Republicans were not taking chances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">On Thursday, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrsc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/261105-Demand-re-Preservation-of-Affidavit-Ballots.pdfhttps:\/\/www.nrsc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/261105-Demand-re-Preservation-of-Affidavit-Ballots.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Republican lawyers wrote<\/a> to election commissioners to demand \u201cthe immediate separation, secure custody, and preservation of all affidavit ballots.\u201d<span class=\"Uj3Weq_pre\">  <\/span>Mr. Colom\u2019s legal team responded <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/scottcolom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Letter-to-Counties-Re-Segregation-of-Ballots.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">with their own letter<\/a>, calling it a request for \u201cunlawful and extraordinary measures\u201d and warning that it risked leading to the unlawful identification of voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Mike Hurst, the chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party and the general counsel of the Republican National Committee, said that lawyers aligned with national Republicans and Ms. Hyde-Smith\u2019s campaign \u201cwill be ready, if necessary, to avail ourselves of every legal option at our disposal, if there is evidence that the law has been violated.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-large css-hxpw2c e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-1jme789 ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-1y6rqsj e13ogyst0\">Republican U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith speaks to guests at her election night watch party on Tuesday in Flowood, Miss.<\/span><span class=\"css-3hmc0r e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"iqSOia_accessibilityLabel\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Sarah Warnock\/USA Today Network, via Reuters<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never seen this before in Mississippi \u2014 we\u2019ve never seen this volume of affidavit ballots around this state,\u201d Mr. Hurst said. He added, \u201cThis race is far from being over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Some Mississippi organizers said it was possible that some of that increase in affidavit ballots might trace back to last July, when the secretary of state\u2019s office <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.ms.gov\/news\/secretary-states-office-partners-experianr-new-voter-roll-maintenance-data\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced it would use data<\/a> from Experian, the credit reporting agency, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/mississippitoday.org\/2026\/11\/02\/red-flag-voter-inactivations-surge-in-midterms-since-secretary-of-state-adopted-unverified-experian-data-to-clean-voter-rolls\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">to help maintain the state\u2019s voter rolls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">As part of that change, registered voters identified as having a new address were labeled \u201cinactive\u201d until they returned a confirmation card with their new address. Anyone who showed up to vote this year and was marked \u201cinactive\u201d had to fill out an affidavit ballot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Cassandra Welchlin, the executive director of the Mississippi Black Women\u2019s Roundtable, said her organization was helping to organize rides for students to get to courthouses and ensure their ballot was counted and would be launching ads to remind voters to follow up on their affidavit and mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">\u201cIs it a little nerve-wracking? President Trump also held a rally in Corinth for Ms. Hyde-Smith and urged Republicans to vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Mr. Colom used Ms. Hyde-Smith\u2019s words against her, making a campaign ad out of her suggestion that voters could choose alternative proteins as meat prices climbed. The tagline \u201cPick another protein?
