He declined to comment on the outcome of the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/midterm-election-results-2026-democrats-house-senate-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">midterm elections<\/a><\/span>, which gave control of Congress to the Democrats in a repudiation of President Trump. It&#8217;s a good thing,&#8221; he said, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. federal law allows American citizens, even those who work for foreign governments, to retain their citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>The 71-year-old pope is on a three-nation, 12-day tour just three weeks after he underwent <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pope-leo-further-treatment-lung-cancer-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">surgery to remove a cancerous tumor<\/a><\/span> from his right lung. He was cleared to travel on Oct. 26 \u2014 two weeks after his surgery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am very happy to be here myself. I know some people were doubtful about this trip taking place,&#8221; Leo told reporters when he greeted them in the back of the plane. &#8220;I confess that from the first day, I had no doubt. I was convinced that this trip had to go forward and very happy to say, praise the Lord and thanks to wonderful medical assistance, I am here today, I think, in fairly good shape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged, though, that he hadn&#8217;t had a chance to play tennis yet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not yet, but I will,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 13, doctors removed the lower lobe of Leo&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pope-leo-hospital-lung-nodule-surgery\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">right lung<\/a><\/span>\u00a0after discovering a malignant tumor. The cancer, identified as a lung adenocarcinoma, was discovered accidentally during a routine abdominal examination, his doctors said. The operation was successful, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pope-leo-further-treatment-lung-cancer-surgery\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">without complications<\/a><\/span>, and Leo was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pope-leo-hospital-released-discharged-saturday-appearance\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">discharged from the hospital<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on Oct. 17.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Early detection is obviously the best way to go, and so regular checkups are a blessing,&#8221; Leo said, crediting his recovery to &#8220;trusting God, good doctors, good surgeons, and overall I think a healthy lifestyle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section
