While they were not the most crucial issue, voters made their opinions on data centers clear.<\/p>\n<p>Big majorities nationally and in all the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/senate-election-results-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Senate battlegrounds<\/a><\/span> opposed having one built in their community, according to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cbs-news-exit-polls-2026-midterms-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">CBS News exit polls<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This opposition benefited Democratic candidates \u2014 most who opposed data centers backed Democrats. But most self-identified Republicans also expressed their resistance to having a new data center in their area too \u2014 even as they predominantly voted for Republican candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Views about data centers are connected to voters&#8217; views about AI more broadly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those who see AI doing more harm than good (which is most voters) are opposed to data centers in their community. More did, however, think that data centers could be good, rather than bad, for local tax revenue.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><em>The CBS News exit poll interviewed thousands of voters across the country at polling locations on Election Day and in the weeks leading up to Election Day.
