Cindy Hyde-Smith.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With 96% of the vote in, just a few dozen votes separated the candidates, a stunningly close result in the Magnolia State.<\/p>\n<p>Hyde-Smith, 67, has been in the Senate since 2018 and is seeking reelection. But Colom, a district attorney, launched a formidable challenge, and could deliver Democrats yet another victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democrats saw a slew of wins in Senate races Tuesday night, including in <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-2026-senate-james-talarico-ken-paxton\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">states<\/a><\/span> that President Trump won by <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/kansas-2026-senate-hamilton-marshall\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">double digits<\/a><\/span> in the 2024 elections. With more than four <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/south-carolina-2026-senate-annie-andrews-darline-graham\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">flips<\/a><\/span> of GOP-held seats, Democrats secured enough seats to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/senate-control-democrats-republicans-2026-midterm-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">take control of the chamber<\/a><\/span> in the new year. If Colom manages to pull off a victory, he would add to their majority.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Colom, 43, is a seventh-generation Mississippian who campaigned on cost of living and health care issues. Democrats began investing in the race in recent weeks, seeing an opportunity for a pickup.
