Using the unrest as a smoke screen for vandalism, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/18\/world\/europe\/france-protests-shock-arson.html\" title=\"\">rioters and looters have also joined in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"_R_d6j7aq_\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">With the protests in their second month, the police have arrested thousands, and politicians are divided over how to respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Here is a breakdown of what has happened.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-5kv5qy eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-191dd23d\">Protest in a Parisian suburb<\/h2>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Soon after returning from the summer break, students at a high school in the working class Parisian suburb of Cr\u00e9teil staged a protest, according to videos posted to social media on Sept. 18. The high schoolers objected to inadequate resources and high workloads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Within days, students elsewhere around Paris initiated similar demonstrations. At schools in the capital\u2019s poorest suburbs, students blocked entrances to protest crumbling infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms and what they say are flaws in the admissions system for higher education.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-5kv5qy eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4a8a2cb\">Demonstrations spread across France<\/h2>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">By Sept. 29, the unrest had spread to around 400 schools around the country, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/USLSyndicat\/status\/2104905021439738216\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to rally organizers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The union of high school students <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/USLSyndicat\/status\/2103888936212783350\/photo\/2\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said the blockades were a protest<\/a> against a \u201clack of teachers and staff, dilapidated schools, overcrowded schedules and classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Students barricaded the entrances to some schools <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/30\/world\/europe\/france-student-protest-arrests.html\" title=\"\">with obstacles including e-bikes<\/a>, while others threw projectiles and set fire to trash cans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The French education minister, \u00c9douard Geffray, said that some of the students\u2019 demands were \u201clegitimate\u201d but condemned the confrontational nature of their protests. He said that students had chased teachers and targeted school principals with firework-launching tubes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">By the end of September, nearly 80 people had been injured, and the authorities had detained more than 440, including many minors.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-5kv5qy eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4acefa2e\">University students bolster the movement<\/h2>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-medium css-d754w4 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-i2069a ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-1y6rqsj e13ogyst0\">A sit-in by students blocking the street outside the Sciences Po university in Paris in early October.<\/span><span class=\"css-3hmc0r e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"iqSOia_accessibilityLabel\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Sarah Meyssonnier\/Reuters<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Within days, the number of schools engulfed in the protests had doubled. <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/02\/world\/europe\/france-schools-protests-unrest.html\" title=\"\">According to the Interior Ministry<\/a>, by Oct. 2, they had spread to more than 1,000 schools across France, including 220 that were blockaded. <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UNEF\/status\/2106089244586602694\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">University students<\/a> also began taking part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Around this time, the authorities said that the protests were mutating from legitimate expressions of educational grievances into something more dangerous, accusing people of shooting mortar-style fireworks, burning public buildings and looting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">By Oct. 2, nearly 400 police officers and over 230 school employees and students had been injured. The number of arrests climbed to 3,000.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-5kv5qy eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-268bb7d4\">The movement broadens<\/h2>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The actions widened in October to encompass labor unions, parents and other activists, as different grievances converged into a mass protest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">On Oct. 6, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/10\/06\/world\/france-protests-students-schools\" title=\"\">around 256,000 people marched<\/a> through Paris and 40 other French cities, according to the Interior Ministry. A union of high school students said protesters had occupied some 1,800 high schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The protests were mostly peaceful, but a fire was ignited in Lyon, and police officers used tear gas, including in Paris. The total number of arrested rose to 6,000, the authorities said. A major union of French judges and prosecutors and a human rights group accused the police of using <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/19\/world\/europe\/france-protests-violence-police-response.html\" title=\"\">disproportionate force<\/a>, including against children as young as 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/10\/08\/world\/france-protests-students-schools\" title=\"\">Two days later<\/a>, on Oct. 8, smaller demonstrations were staged throughout the country, rallying around 71,500 people. The following week, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/13\/world\/europe\/macron-france-protests.html\" title=\"\">the Interior Ministry<\/a> said that 160,000 people joined marches on Oct. 13 across France.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-5kv5qy eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3f9e7bfb\">The largest demonstrations yet<\/h2>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">More than half a million people joined 110 antigovernment marches throughout France on Oct. 17, according to an official estimate. A major union, the C.G.T., put the number even higher, at 800,000. Using either count, it was the largest day of protest since the demonstrations began in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Many of the marchers were peaceful, but some were not. Around the country, rioters vandalized around 1,500 shops, the authorities said. In Paris, where over 100,000 people marched peacefully, a few hundred rioters faced off against officers. According to the police, the rioters <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/17\/world\/europe\/france-protest-riots-marseille.html\" title=\"\">burned cars and smashed storefronts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">In the large town of Limoges, in central France, rioters set fire to the 19th-century City Hall. In <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/world\/europe\/100000011222054\/france-protests-fire-limoges-city-hall.html\" title=\"\">a moment captured on video<\/a>, the
