Mr. Trump has described Dr. El-Sayed as a \u201cvicious, violent jihadist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Facing a backlash over rising prices and working to overcome the president\u2019s deep unpopularity, Republicans across the country have tarred their opponents with false, inflammatory and deeply personal attacks in the final stretch of the midterm election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">In many cases, they are following the lead of a president who has repeatedly rewritten the rules of acceptable discourse in American politics. Many of the attacks have drawn little pushback from within the party, but some Republicans say they are concerned by the trend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s awful,\u201d said former Senator Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican and critic of Mr. Trump. Mr. Flake, who is backing candidates in both parties in the midterms, said Republicans had gone down a darker road in their messaging: \u201cWe\u2019ve gotten progressively more crass and crude and vulgar. But this seems to be a new level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The strategy risks turning off some moderate voters who see the rhetoric as over-the-top or offensive, political observers said. But it could be effective at energizing the Republican base. Democrats, who have widely condemned the Republicans\u2019 attacks, worry the lines will land with some voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Democrats themselves have at times used strikingly personal attacks, often accusing Republicans of corruption. And some Democrats have imitated the president\u2019s crude approach: Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s office, for example, made social-media posts this year <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/31\/us\/politics\/newsom-social-media-grindr-homophobia.html\" title=\"\">suggesting<\/a> that various conservatives were gay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">But in the midterms the Republican attacks stand out for their viciousness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">American political campaigns have long been awash in negative and dubious attacks by both parties \u2014 in debate lines, TV commercials and stump speeches \u2014 but this bitter, hard-fought cycle may set a new standard. Some political scientists said this election season had devolved into the most negative, dark campaign in modern American history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">\u201cI think it\u2019s the worst,\u201d said Christina Greer, a political science professor at Fordham University. She attributed the tone to candidates\u2019 desire to package their message for social media, and to Republicans\u2019 mirroring of Mr. Trump: \u201cHe\u2019s opened a portal to the degradation of our electoral system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">In Texas, Vice President JD Vance <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/14\/us\/politics\/vance-talarico-attacks.html\" title=\"\">suggested<\/a> at a rally that Mr. Talarico was gay, drawing gasps from the crowd. \u201cA guy that age who is so obsessed and focused on transgender children, I don\u2019t know about you, but I never want to see that guy\u2019s web browser history,\u201d Mr. Vance added, referring to Mr. Talarico\u2019s past statements in support of transgender youth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Mr. Talarico has a girlfriend. The attack was part of a broad effort by Republicans to portray Mr. Talarico as extreme. In a statement, the spokeswoman, Bernadette Breslin, claimed that Dr. El-Sayed had \u201cpledged support\u201d for a terrorist regime and said that \u201cif Talarico didn\u2019t want to be called anti-meat, he shouldn\u2019t have announced his campaign would go vegan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Dr. El-Sayed has said he is <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/21\/us\/politics\/abdul-el-sayed-muslim-brotherhood-mother-half-sister.html\" title=\"\">loyal to the U.S. Constitution<\/a>. Mr. Talarico has said he is not a vegan and that his campaign <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/960672996629298\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cbasically\u201d<\/a> runs on barbecue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Mr. Flake said the coarseness of some Republican attacks stemmed from a mix of desperation in the party and a mimicking of Mr. Trump. But he said he found a \u201csilver lining\u201d in the backlash some of Mr. Trump\u2019s \u201cimitators\u201d had experienced \u2014 including in Republican criticism of a headline-grabbing attack ad in the Ohio governor\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">That ad came from the campaign of Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican nominee for governor. The commercial featured the mother of his Democratic opponent, Dr. Amy Acton, who says she has not spoken to her mother since she was 12, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/24\/us\/politics\/vivek-ramaswamy-ad-ohio-amy-acton.html\" title=\"\">after her stepfather<\/a> was charged with raping her. The sitting governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine, a Republican, called the ad <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/22\/us\/politics\/ohio-governor-ad-ramaswamy-acton.html\" title=\"\">\u201cdeeply, deeply troubling,\u201d<\/a> even as Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance defended it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Former President Barack Obama, appearing at a rally in Ohio this month, <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/24\/us\/politics\/obama-trump-midterms-campaign.html\" title=\"\">said he was baffled<\/a> that \u201cthe standards of behavior have gotten so low that somebody can run an ad like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-medium css-d754w4 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-i2069a ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-1y6rqsj e13ogyst0\">Some Republicans have criticized Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican candidate for Ohio governor, for his ad that featured the estranged mother of his opponent, Dr. Amy Acton.<\/span><span class=\"css-3hmc0r e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"iqSOia_accessibilityLabel\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Maddie McGarvey for The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">In Maine, Senator Susan Collins, a Republican who built a brand on civility, denounced a radio ad from the top super PAC for Senate Republicans that cast her Democratic opponent, Troy Jackson, as a \u201cfreak\u201d for having two children with his second cousin. Ms. Collins called for the ad to be taken down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">But Ms. Collins, who has deplored Mr. Jackson\u2019s efforts to cast her as corrupt, herself commented on Mr. Jackson\u2019s family in the summer, telling Politico: \u201cI\u2019m not going to bring up the fact that the mother of his two children is his second cousin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Other Republican attacks have gone largely unchallenged inside the party. After Mr. Marshall suggested his Democratic opponent, Adam Hamilton, was a \u201cgroomer\u201d of children, there was no significant Republican criticism. (In 2022 she had <a class=\"css-povzk\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AnnieAndrewsMD\/status\/1526651314146619392?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">spoken out against<\/a> a trans sports ban in South Carolina.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">On the campaign trail in Michigan, Mike Rogers, the Republican candidate for Senate, has often brought supporters who have questioned Dr. El-Sayed\u2019s loyalty to America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">At a Rogers rally in Plainwell, Mich., on Thursday, Senator Tim Sheehy, Republican of Montana, told the crowd, \u201cYou better be afraid,\u201d suggesting that supporting Dr. El-Sayed would be a step toward Shariah law in Michigan. \u201cWe have a radical Islamist on the other side of this ticket who hates this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">Asked later about Mr. Sheehy\u2019s comments, Mr. Rogers told reporters, \u201cYou haven\u2019t heard me say any of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-medium css-d754w4 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-i2069a ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-1y6rqsj e13ogyst0\">Senator Tim Sheehy, Republican of Montana, in Washington. But in the past, candidates in both parties sought to push back. In 2008, the Republican nominee for president, Senator John McCain, defended his opponent, Barack Obama, when a woman at a rally said she did not trust him because \u201che\u2019s an Arab.\u201d Mr. McCain replied, \u201cNo, ma\u2019am, he\u2019s a decent family man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">This year, Democrats say they fear that Islamophobic attacks on Dr. El-Sayed have resonated with some voters and are hurting his chances in a race that is critical in the battle for Senate control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">\u201cI won\u2019t say it\u2019s the worst and most horrific ever,\u201d Mike McGuinness, the Democratic mayor of Pontiac, Mich., said of the Republican attacks on Dr. El-Sayed\u2019s faith and background. \u201cBut it is definitely a Hall of Fame contender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-qhzo1x evys1bk0\">The Rev.
