{"id":106515,"date":"2026-10-28T10:05:28","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T10:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/classified-material-missing-from-epstein-files-documents-suggest\/"},"modified":"2026-10-28T10:05:28","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T10:05:28","slug":"classified-material-missing-from-epstein-files-documents-suggest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/classified-material-missing-from-epstein-files-documents-suggest\/","title":{"rendered":"Classified material missing from Epstein files, documents suggest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Attorney General Todd Blanche has long maintained that the so-called Epstein files, even those kept from the public, contain no secret information related to national security.<\/p>\n<p>When the document releases began last winter, Blanche noted that the Epstein Files Transparency Act authorized withholding information in the interest of national security or foreign policy, but said, &#8220;no files are being withheld or redacted on that basis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s not some tranche of super-secret documents about Jeffrey Epstein that we&#8217;re withholding, we&#8217;re actually not withholding anything based upon [national defense information],&#8221; said Blanche, who was deputy attorney general at the time.<\/p>\n<p>But the contents of at least three documents in the massive tranche of files indicate classified information was included in files collected by the DOJ.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the documents shows Blanche&#8217;s Office of the Deputy Attorney General itself received classified material related to Epstein in March 2025. By law, material can only be classified for national security purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What exactly was classified and why remains a mystery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice says it collected 6 million pages of material and ultimately <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/epstein-files-released-doj-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">released over 3 million<\/a><\/span> of those pages after reviewing for duplication, attorney-client privilege and relevance to Jeffrey Epstein.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Congressional challenges and a <a href=\"https:\/\/publicintegrityproject.org\/the-latest\/public-integrity-project-sues-acting-attorney-general-for-failing-to-produce-epstein-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> are casting doubts on the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/epstein-files-justice-department-inspector-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">DOJ&#8217;s claims<\/a><\/span> and demanding the release of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/epstein-files-whats-missing\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">more documents<\/a><\/span> that were held back.<\/p>\n<h2>Clues about classified material<\/h2>\n<p>Included among the Epstein files is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/epstein\/files\/DataSet%209\/EFTA00172473.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight-page timeline<\/a> of the FBI&#8217;s New York office&#8217;s initial efforts last year to track down and deliver its voluminous files to the Justice Department&#8217;s Washington headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>On March 25, 2025, one document shows delivery of &#8220;16 Epstein items to ODAG,&#8221; referring to the Office of the Deputy Attorney General. Among them, items No. 2 and No. 6 are described as &#8220;Epstein Transparency Project &#8211; Classified Material&#8221; and &#8220;CDs with classified materials (x2).&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Epstein Transparency Project refers to the Justice Department&#8217;s effort to review the files and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/epstein-files-redaction-over-500-pages-entirely-blacked-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">redact<\/a><\/span>, withhold or clear them for release. It is not clear what exactly was identified as classified. Every page receives its own number. In the Epstein files, the sequence goes from 1 to 2,858,498, which is the tally of approximately how many pages of documents were released.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the DOJ, other documents \u2014 including court records and investigative files they&#8217;ve previously released \u2014 bring the total to over 3 million.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the Epstein files&#8217; Bates numbers are other, older coding numbers that appear on many documents. Each page is also labeled with an EFTA page number.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the EFTAs are sequential, the R1s have gaps which range from 1 page to hundreds of pages. Each time a gap appears \u2014 for example, if the EFTA advances by 1 but the R1 advances by 2 \u2014 it&#8217;s evidence that pages were removed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By comparing these sequences it&#8217;s possible to identify gaps where documents, mostly emails, were removed between that earlier review and the final release. Instructions given to DOJ attorneys working on processing the redactions state:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the document is an email chain and the most-inclusive email (i.e., containing all the back-and-forth) has already been reviewed and redacted as appropriate for production, the interstitial back-and-forth can be marked as duplicates.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other words, all emails exchanged prior to the last email in a chain can be considered a duplicate, because the last one should include all of the messages, and eliminating the duplicates will speed up the redaction process. Once a document is marked as a duplicate, it would likely be excluded from the files.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If that was the case, this was only partially accomplished because duplicate emails still exist throughout the files.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the possibility that errors in the process could have resulted in crucial emails mistakenly being deleted.<\/p>\n<h2>Lack of transparency<\/h2>\n<p>The review and redaction process was conducted by hundreds of DOJ attorneys working under a compressed timeline. Given the scale of the task, it&#8217;s possible that pages were withheld as a result of honest mistakes. But without a roadmap to the redactions and removals, it&#8217;s impossible to make that determination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Independent journalist Katie Phang is<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/judge-orders-doj-unredact-more-epstein-files-or-explain-why-blanche\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"> suing<\/a><\/span> the Justice Department, seeking the release of more files as well as an explanation of redactions and removals. A federal judge has made several rulings in her favor and the DOJ is appealing those rulings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of her lawsuit, Phang is asking the court to appoint a special master to review the files.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it wasn&#8217;t intentional, then was it gross negligence? Were you just lazy? If it was intentional then I think there&#8217;s [expletive] there that they don&#8217;t want people to see,&#8221; Phang told CBS News. &#8220;My speculation runs an entire spectrum of reaction \u2014 but at the end of the day it just makes the DOJ look bad.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ has acknowledged making several mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>It admitted to removing, and then restoring, a photo of now Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/photo-of-howard-lutnick-on-epsteins-island-was-removed-from-justice-department-files\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a 2012 visit to Epstein&#8217;s island<\/a><\/span>, contradicting claims Lutnick had previously made about his <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/howard-lutnick-jeffrey-epstein-in-business-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">contacts with Epstein<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, DOJ officials claimed <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jeffrey-epstein-jail-video-no-missing-minute-government-source-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a minute<\/a><\/span> was missing from <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/epstein-files-jail-cell-death-video-logs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">prison security video<\/a><\/span> from the night Epstein died, which <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jeffrey-epstein-missing-minute-jail-video-shows\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">turned out to not be true<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a case where the process has inhibited public trust in what is ultimately released, and there&#8217;s a long tradition of this, whether it&#8217;s the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/daniel-ellsberg-dies-age-92-pentagon-papers-leaker\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Pentagon Papers<\/a><\/span> or the Epstein files,&#8221; said attorney Stanley Brand, a veteran litigator and distinguished fellow in law and government at Penn State Dickinson Law. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is just another piece where the government process, where making this stuff available just fuels suspicion that there&#8217;s something we&#8217;re not seeing, and I don&#8217;t know that ever gets resolved.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<section
