He was among the latest big names caught up in a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/terry-rozier-chauncey-billups-nba-gambling-poker-indicted-names\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">sweeping federal gambling investigation<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Beasley&#8217;s attorney, Steve Haney, told The Associated Press in a text message that they were negotiating an agreement with the government &#8220;with an expected direction in the coming days.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beasley, 29, and sports agent Paolo Zamorano, who has also pleaded not guilty, were among six people charged in an <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nba-malik-beasley-ed-davis-indicted-illegal-sports-gambling\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">indictment unsealed<\/a><\/span> this summer detailing a gambling scandal that has involved more than three dozen arrests. In exchange, the indictment said, the bettors bribed Beasley \u2014 and his debts to Davis were reduced or eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only way you can beat Vegas is sports betting,&#8221; Davis told Beasley in a Jan. 26, 2024, text message, according to the indictment. &#8220;Everything else they got the edge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beasley borrowed money from Davis, a former teammate, after racking up millions of dollars in gambling losses. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/pistons\/2025\/07\/01\/malik-beasley-had-8m-in-problems-amid-on-court-resurgence-with-pistons\/84434319007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widely reported<\/a> financial problems include disputes with a Detroit landlord, a Milwaukee barber and a Minnesota dentist. A 2025 lawsuit from a sports marketing agency resulted in a $1 million default judgment against him.<\/p>\n<p>Beasley has been out of the NBA since playing with the Detroit Pistons in 2024-25 on a one-year, $6 million contract. He averaged 16 points per game and scored 20 in his last game, a playoff loss to the New York Knicks. He is one of five players in NBA history with more than 300 three-pointers in a season.<\/p>\n<p>Davis was a journeyman who was primarily a backup in his 12-year career that saw him play for eight franchises and earn roughly $48 million in gross salary. He averaged 5.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game and last appeared in the NBA in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Beasley and Davis were briefly teammates in Minnesota in the 2020-21 season.<\/p>\n<section
