He was, he said, \u201cjust getting started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">How did his speech go over? The New York Times talked with six voters \u2014 many of whom voted for Mr. Trump reluctantly \u2014 as part of a regular check-in over the first 100 days of Mr. Trump\u2019s term.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-67adfe2b\">\u2018It was very nice to see a lot of empathy.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-26f5c843\"><span>Tali Jackont, 57, from Los Angeles<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">What struck Tali Jackont, an educator, more than anything was Mr. Trump\u2019s showmanship. The president, she said, showed off his magnetism \u2014 his ability, like it or not, to combine forcefulness with bristling digs. She also enjoyed his humor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cListen, he understands the media, he understands TV,\u201d she said. \u201cHe tried to say things here and there to break the seriousness of the speech,\u201d she added, noting that there were a few times when she found herself laughing out loud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The entire speech, she added, \u201cwas very impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An immigrant from Israel and longtime Democrat, Ms. Jackont changed political course in November, voting for Mr. Trump, hoping that he could help Israel achieve peace, while reducing crime and getting her adopted country moving in a better direction. Though she would have liked the president to have spent more time on the Middle East, she said, his speech addressed the issues she cared about to her satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One thing that surprised Ms. Jackont: the time Mr. Trump took to acknowledge cabinet members and speak compassionately about guests in the audience, like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/05\/us\/politics\/trump-guests-congress.html\" title=\"\">Devarjaye Daniel<\/a>, a 13-year-old known as D.J., who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, and was invited to the speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt showed a little bit of warmth of personality when he spoke about people,\u201d she said, adding that, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean that he cannot behave the opposite and kick someone off like Zelensky. But it was very nice to see a lot of empathy. It was very nice to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Kurt Streeter<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-37f8e40d\">\u2018This was supposed to be a speech about how he was making America great again, but he was throwing out insults.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-6181142f\"><span>Isaiah Thompson, 22, from Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Isaiah Thompson, a college student, was expecting a finely tuned performance from Mr. Trump in his speech to Congress. After all, he said, the president has had a long career in entertainment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">What he was not expecting was the congressional response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOn the Republican side, you had people standing, waving and chanting, \u2018U.S.A.,\u2019 and on the Democrat side, you had people sitting in silence and holding signs that said, \u2018Musk steals,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThat one room showed how divided the country is. That divide worries me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Thompson said he was fine with the president listing his accomplishments in the first six weeks of his second term, much of it an echo of the promises made in his inauguration speech in January. He acknowledged that the volume of Mr. Trump\u2019s actions is impressive, but remained troubled by the pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The address, he said, was intentionally provocative, with Mr. Trump taking unnecessary swipes at Democrats. \u201cThis was supposed to be a speech about how he was making America great again, but he was throwing out insults,\u201d said Mr. Thompson, who supports the Green Party but ultimately voted for Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Thompson was particularly bothered by Mr. Trump\u2019s use of tariffs as a bargaining tool and his description of certain programs \u2014 involving Africa, immigration or L.G.B.T.Q. communities \u2014 as a flagrant waste of taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt feels like those programs were targeted by DOGE, when there are plenty of other programs that could be cut,\u201d he said, referring to Elon Musk\u2019s effort to cut back the federal government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Audra D. S. Burch<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2abfb4e1\">\u2018I\u2019m ashamed of the Democratic Party.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1ab7f5cf\"><span>Darlene Alfieri, 55, from Erie, Pa.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIn my opinion, as a Democrat, that was a Republican Party win,\u201d said Darlene Alfieri, a longtime registered Democrat who had taken a chance on Mr. Trump in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She did not come to this conclusion primarily because of the president\u2019s speech. It might have been a bit more professional than some of his past speeches, she felt, but it was still light on the specifics she craved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019s still talking that we\u2019re going to be great, that things are going to get better, but I\u2019m not seeing them get better in my day to day life,\u201d she said. \u201cTalk is cheap.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No, she believed it was a good night for Mr. Trump primarily because she thought it was a terrible night for the Democrats, some of whom heckled the president at the beginning and then mostly refused to stand and clap throughout, even for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/05\/us\/politics\/trump-guests-congress.html\" title=\"\">Devarjaye Daniel<\/a>, a boy with cancer that the president recognized in the crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m ashamed of the Democratic Party,\u201d she said. \u201cDeliberately being argumentative and refusing to acknowledge good when it\u2019s good is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As for Mr. Trump himself, her opinion has remained the same since the election: supportive of his broader goals, frustrated that he is not more forthcoming about how he plans to achieve them. She welcomed the elimination of waste in the federal government, but wondered whether there were measures to make sure it did not come back? Reviving U.S. manufacturing is a great goal, she thought, but how much economic pain would it require?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s speech did not answer many of these questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHow is this going to happen?\u201d she asked. \u201cHow long is it going to take? What are we going to have to endure in the meantime?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Campbell Robertson<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6f19f17f\">\u2018The way he said the American dream is alive, and coming back, that\u2019s a message of hope.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-3f0977ea\"><span>Hamid Chaudhry, 53, from Reading, Pa.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hamid Chaudhry, a business owner, had cast a skeptical vote for Mr. Trump last year. He liked the president\u2019s business-minded approach but was concerned about his harsh rhetoric on immigrants. Mr. Chaudhry, now an American citizen, had come to the country from Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Trump\u2019s speech touched on many of the themes that drew him to this country in the first place. \u201cI came to America for the land of opportunity,\u201d Mr. Chaudhry said. \u201cThe way he said the American dream is alive, and coming back, that\u2019s a message of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He liked Mr. Trump\u2019s words of support for farmers, knowing many in rural Berks County, and he appreciated the talk of bringing manufacturing back. He liked the idea of spending money on problems here rather than in foreign countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Chaudhry was not yet panicking about the impact of tariffs on the farmers and small business owners, believing that the tariffs were simply a tough negotiating move. As an example of what he saw as Mr. Trump\u2019s deal-making savvy, he pointed out that Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/04\/world\/europe\/ukraine-us-trump-military-support.html\" title=\"\">had publicly committed to negotiating a peace deal<\/a> after <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/28\/us\/politics\/trump-zelensky-us-ukraine-russia.html\" title=\"\">being berated<\/a> at the White House a few days earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The president \u201ccalled his bluff,\u201d Mr. Chaudhry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The strident talk about immigrants still bothered him, and he worried that constantly blaming them for so many problems might unleash hatred that could prove difficult to control. But he said Mr. Trump\u2019s actions \u2014 surrounding himself with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/25\/us\/houston-venezuelan-immigrants-murder-jocelyn-nungaray.html\" title=\"\">Kash Patel<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/01\/style\/usha-jd-vance-ohio.html\" title=\"\">Usha Vance<\/a>, born to immigrant families, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/17\/us\/elections\/elon-musk-town-hall-pennsylvania.html\" title=\"\">Elon Musk<\/a>, born in South Africa \u2014 suggested that his fiery talk was more rhetorical than substantive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">All in all, Mr. Chaudhry said, \u201cI\u2019m feeling more comfortable\u201d about Mr. Trump. But, he added, \u201cI hope, at the speed they\u2019re moving, there\u2019s no major screw up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Campbell Robertson<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-13007372\">\u2018He\u2019s constantly working angles.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-554e88c1\"><span>Perry Hunter, 55, from Sellersburg, Ind.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Democrats\u2019 behavior during the speech was also a huge turnoff for Perry Hunter, a high school teacher. He was disappointed, for example, that they mostly did not applaudi \u2014 even when Mr. Trump announced that \u201ca top terrorist\u201d had been captured for a bombing in Afghanistan that killed American military members, or when the boy with cancer was awarded a Secret Service badge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf they can\u2019t get past their partisanship for these things, it just reinforces that the Democrat Party is not for regular Americans,\u201d he said, adding that Mr. Trump knows exactly how to appeal to \u201cregular Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The speech was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/05\/us\/politics\/trump-guests-congress.html\" title=\"\">Trump showmanship<\/a> at its best, Mr. Hunter said, full of typical political bluster, which appears to be how Mr. Trump gets things done. Look how Mr. Zelensky <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/04\/world\/europe\/ukraine-us-trump-military-support.html\" title=\"\">was now agreeing to make concessions and participate in peace talks<\/a>, he added, just several days after the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/28\/us\/politics\/trump-zelensky-us-ukraine-russia.html\" title=\"\">tense and dramatic Oval Office meeting<\/a> that led Mr. Trump to pause aid to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEveryone thought it was the end of us helping them,\u201d Mr. Hunter said. \u201cBut the way it was handled, correctly or not, Zelensky is now basically apologizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He called Mr. Trump \u201ca master negotiator,\u201d adding, \u201cHe\u2019s constantly working angles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe thing that bothers me the most about him, though, is that he thrives in chaos,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just seems like he wants that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Hunter isn\u2019t sure what to make of the tariffs just yet, but he said Mr. Trump has two years, until the midterm elections, to make them work for the American economy. While he personally would tolerate rising prices in the short term if that led to them dropping in the long term, he expects other Americans to \u201cwant everything now, immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou have to have patience,\u201d he said, \u201cand I\u2019m not sure how patient we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Juliet Macur<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5ce32430\">\u2018Trump is accomplishing what many of the people who voted for him were hoping.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1b125f5b\"><span>Jaime Escobar Jr., 46, from Roma, Texas<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It only took a few minutes, but for Jaime Escobar Jr., the mayor of a small town on the Texas border, the disruption of Mr. Trump\u2019s speech by Representative Al Green, Democrat of Texas, was another reminder of the nation\u2019s political divide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is expected, yet a little sad,\u201d<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>Mr. Escobar said, adding, \u201cWhen a president speaks, regardless of the political party, I think there should be a sort of decorum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Escobar paid particular attention to Mr. Trump\u2019s message on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/03\/04\/us\/politics\/trump-immigration-policies-deportations-data.html\" title=\"\">immigration<\/a>. Roma, population 11,000, struggled with a migrant crisis under the Biden administration. Seeing his hometown overloaded by the daily arrivals led him, once a loyal Democrat, to vote for Mr. Trump. He was not alone. Starr County, home to Roma, also flipped for Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIllegal crossings have gone down significantly \u2014 and it didn\u2019t take so much an act of Congress, but an executive order and a different type of leadership,\u201d Mr. Escobar said. \u201cTrump is accomplishing what many of the people who voted for him were hoping he would accomplish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But not everything in Mr. Trump\u2019s speech left him brimming with optimism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In fact, he went to bed worried about how the tariff wars between the U.S. and its trading partners would affect the local economy of Roma, which has close commercial ties with Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe don\u2019t know how that\u2019s going to impact us,\u201d he said, a tint of worry in his voice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Edgar
