Over the past month, Russia has been <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russia-ukraine-war-massive-attack-energy-sector-zelenskyy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">intensifying<\/a><\/span> its strikes against civilian and energy infrastructure to try to cripple the power grid before the brutal Ukrainian winter. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Witkoff&#8217;s &#8220;humanitarian&#8221; comment sparked immediate backlash from Republicans who have openly criticized the president and his administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;WTF, Steve?&#8221; said North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis. &#8220;Look up the definition of &#8216;humanitarian.&#8217; What an embarrassing and outrageous thing to say. John Cornyn of Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JohnCornyn\/status\/2112876842537402446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a> to a video of Witkoff&#8217;s comments: &#8220;No. Putin is a stone cold killer,&#8221; he wrote on X.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another embarrassment,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDonBacon\/status\/2112883891837292691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, who has been critical of the Trump administration&#8217;s handling of Russia and Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Witkoff&#8217;s praise of Putin also comes as Mr. Trump made the surprise move last week to\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-waives-sanctions-tariffs-russian-oil-lindsey-graham\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">waive new U.S. sanctions on Russia<\/a><\/span>\u00a0two days before they were supposed to go into effect, defying Congress and his late friend, Sen. Lindsey Graham. The waivers came one week after Mr. Trump had\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-russia-release-diesel-oil-iran-skyrocketing-costs\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">eased sanctions on Russian diesel<\/a><\/span> and announced a deal with Putin to import diesel to the U.S. market.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump has expressed increasing frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and on Tuesday, said &#8220;Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine.
