The current press briefing room was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/the-president-the-press-and-proximity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">constructed during the Nixon administration<\/a>, replacing a swimming pool that dated back to Franklin D. Roosevelt&#8217;s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>But late last month, Mr. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/117344773205161235\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted a before-and-after image to Truth Social<\/a> that suggested the briefing room could be turned back into a swimming pool.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Mr. Trump&#8217;s first term, administration officials floated the idea of moving the press corps out of the building, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FaceTheNation\/status\/820659116419010562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">framing it<\/a> as a bid to broaden access by using a roomier part of the White House complex rather than the small, cramped spaces in the West Wing. Incoming chief of staff Reince Priebus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meet-press-01-15-17-n707086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told NBC News<\/a> the administration had discussed holding news conferences in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is adjacent to the West Wing.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump ultimately did not follow through with the plans, telling Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/world\/trump-backs-off-moving-news-briefings-from-white-house-idUSKBN1521YA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two days before his 2017 inauguration<\/a>: &#8220;The press went crazy, so I said, &#8216;Let&#8217;s not move it.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The idea has appeared to reemerge after more than a year of disputes between the Trump administration and journalists over access to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Mr. Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-banning-cnn-ms-now-politico-white-house\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">attempted to ban<\/a><\/span> CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House complex, accusing them of unfair coverage. Journalists from all three outlets were briefly unable to access the building, but a federal judge <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/judge-blocks-trump-white-house-ban-cnn-msnow-politico\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">reinstated their press credentials<\/a><\/span>, finding the ban likely violated the First Amendment and the news outlets&#8217; right to due process.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/presidential-tv-pool-suspended-trump-ban-cnn\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">continued to periodically block CNN<\/a><\/span> from participating in the television press pool, a group of five networks that cover the president&#8217;s travel and events on a rotating basis and provide video to other news organizations.<\/p>\n<p>(CNN and CBS News are both part of Skydance, the parent company formed by the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.)<\/p>\n<p>More than a year ago, the White House <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/associated-press-reporters-blocked-oval-office-event-white-house\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">prevented the Associated Press<\/a><\/span> from accessing the Oval Office and some other spaces because the wire service declined to refer to the Gulf of Mexico by Mr. Trump&#8217;s preferred term, the Gulf of America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon has also clamped down on press access. Last year, the military <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cbs-news-media-outlets-pentagon-press-restrictions\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">required reporters<\/a><\/span> to sign onto a set of restrictions \u2014 including a promise not to &#8220;solicit&#8221; sensitive information \u2014 in order to maintain daily access to the Pentagon. Most news organizations declined to sign the new rules and vacated the building.<\/p>\n<p>After a judge <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/judge-strikes-down-restrictive-pentagon-press-policy-finding-it-violates-first-amendment\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">struck down the Pentagon&#8217;s press restrictions<\/a><\/span> earlier this year, the military <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pentagon-new-press-credentials-remove-media-offices\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">announced<\/a><\/span> it would stop allowing reporters to enter the building unescorted altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SeanParnellASW\/status\/2036197221121794508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> a &#8220;new and improved press workspace will be established in an annex facility
