That leaves the dynamic in the closing weeks very much up for grabs. The <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/john-kennedy-trump-affordability-iran-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cost of living<\/a><\/span> is the top issue for Texas voters, and most say they&#8217;ve been negatively affected by <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/oil-prices-iran-war-consumers-shopping\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">higher prices<\/a><\/span>. Among these voters, Talarico enjoys a sizable lead over Paxton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And more see Talarico as having the right character to serve as senator.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed__float-wrap\">\n<figure Republicans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On a wider scale, he draws 9% of people who \u2014 regardless of their own party affiliation \u2014 say they never vote for Democrats, but will this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Where Paxton does well<\/h2>\n<p>But some things are different in Texas than in the country overall: The Trump administration&#8217;s deportation program gets more support in Texas, compared to the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/midterm-poll-battleground-tracker-democrats-house-advantage\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">most recent CBS News national poll,<\/a><\/span> and that advantages Paxton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And outside the economic considerations, Republicans say they feel Talarico represents policies that are a threat to their culture and way of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Democrats, for their part, feel the same about Paxton.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed__float-wrap\">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image  <span class=\"img embed__content \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" liberal, Talarico is viewed as &#8220;very liberal&#8221; by nearly half. That means Talarico needs to do overwhelmingly well with independents and get some vote shift among GOPers, or activate enough new voters to offset that.<\/p>\n<p>He also needs strong turnout from younger voters, who today say they back him in large percentages.
