{"id":1044,"date":"2025-01-23T18:02:38","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T18:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/how-food-brands-and-drugmakers-are-responding-to-fdas-ban-of-food-dye-red-3\/"},"modified":"2025-01-23T18:02:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T18:02:38","slug":"how-food-brands-and-drugmakers-are-responding-to-fdas-ban-of-food-dye-red-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/how-food-brands-and-drugmakers-are-responding-to-fdas-ban-of-food-dye-red-3\/","title":{"rendered":"How food brands and drugmakers are responding to FDA&#8217;s ban of food dye Red 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nCompanies say they are working to update their products to comply with the Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/red-3-fda-ban-food-dye\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">decision Wednesday<\/a><\/span> to ban the artificial food dye Red 3, after the agency said it was revoking the additive&#8217;s authorization over concerns it was causing cancer in rats.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nWhile the agency says that studies show the way Red 3 causes cancer in rats does not occur in humans, the law still requires additives that cause cancer in animals to be pulled from the market even if they are not proven to pose a risk to humans as well.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/hfp-constituent-updates\/fda-revoke-authorization-use-red-no-3-food-and-ingested-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> that food companies will have until Jan. 15, 2027 to stop using the dye. Drugmakers will have an extra year, until January 2028, to comply with the change.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2>&#13;<br \/>\nWhich food brands have Red 3 in their products?&#13;<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nRed 3, also known as erythrosine, Acid Red 51 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/industry\/color-additives\/fdc-red-no-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FD&amp;C Red No. 3<\/a>, is often used in candy. But other companies also use Red 3 to color a wide variety of products, from drinks to vegetarian meats, and will be forced to rework their recipes.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nYoo-hoo&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kdpproductfacts.com\/product\/a0e3h000003LKBQAA4\/yoohoo-strawberry-flavored-drink-65-fl-oz-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strawberry drink<\/a> is being reformulated to be made without Red 3, the company told CBS News. &#8220;The new formula will be on shelves before the end of the year,&#8221; beverage giant Keurig Dr Pepper said in an email.\u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nKellanova, which manufactures <a href=\"https:\/\/smartlabel.kelloggs.com\/Product\/Index\/00038000232770#nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pop-Tarts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/smartlabel.kelloggs.com\/Product\/Index\/00028989971951#nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MorningStar<\/a> products that use Red 3, said it is working to &#8220;ensure any impacted products are in compliance&#8221; by 2027.\u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nA Nestl\u00e9 spokesperson said most of their recipes already do not include synthetic colors, including Red 3. For products that still use it, like Nesquik <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodnes.com\/nesquik\/products\/nesquik-strawberry-low-fat-milk-8-fl-oz-bottle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strawberry milk<\/a> or Toll House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionix.com\/i\/toll-house\/cookie-dough-funfetti-edible\/5e5a1b984eb780dc028c2047\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Funfetti cookie dough<\/a>, the spokesperson said they have &#8220;already been actively removing&#8221; the dye.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nSome Conagra Brands products, including its Marie Callender&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/smartlabel.labelinsight.com\/product\/6731064\/ingredients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">birthday cake pie<\/a> and Duncan Hines <a href=\"https:\/\/smartlabel.labelinsight.com\/product\/6737858\/ingredients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">confetti cake mix<\/a>, list Red 3 as an ingredient. A Conagra spokesperson said they are &#8220;minimally impacted&#8221; by the FDA&#8217;s ruling, and are &#8220;taking steps to remove it from a limited number&#8221; of their products in time for the rule&#8217;s deadline.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nSeasoning and condiments giant McCormick said it had also &#8220;already begun the process of removing Red 3 prior to the FDA ruling&#8221; on the dye. The spokesperson said McCormick has only &#8220;very limited use of Red 3 in our branded retail products.&#8221; Some of their products still listing Red 3 include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mccormick.com\/spices-and-flavors\/other\/bacn-pieces-bacon-flavored-chips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vegan imitation bacon chips<\/a> and Cake Mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionix.com\/i\/cake-mate\/decorating-icing-red\/5c1f3601506a4ccb4360d31a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">red icing<\/a>.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nA spokesperson from Dunkin&#8217; Donuts confirmed that some of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunkindonuts.com\/content\/dam\/dd\/pdf\/allergy_ingredient_guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vegetarian bacon products<\/a> contain the dye, but that version of the product is sold only in its 48 kosher locations. None of the company&#8217;s other locations sell products with the dye.\u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nA Lindt &amp; Spr\u00fcngli spokesperson said none of the company&#8217;s Lindt products contain Red 3. The spokesperson did not comment on some other brands owned by the company that do list Red 3 in their ingredients, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.russellstover.com\/sugar-free-candy-coated-chocolate-gems-75-oz-bag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Russell Stover<\/a>.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nSeveral food brands still listing Red 3 in some of their products did not immediately respond to a request for comment on when or if they plan to comply with the FDA&#8217;s ruling, including:&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\nWhich food brands do not have Red 3 in their products?&#13;<br \/>\n\t&#13;<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nMany food brands never used Red 3. Many others have already changed their recipes to remove it, meaning nutrition facts published online or in databases can be out of date. The best way to check if a product has the dye is to read the label printed on the package.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe FDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/color-additives-information-consumers\/color-additives-questions-and-answers-consumers#:~:text=How%20do%20I%20know%20whether%20color%20additives%20are%20in%20my%20food%3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">requires companies<\/a>\u00a0to disclose when they use color additives in their ingredients list. Some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/industry\/color-certification\/color-certification-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">synthetic dyes<\/a>, including Red 3, have to be specifically named. This means they cannot be mentioned only as &#8220;artificial colors&#8221; on the label.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHershey&#8217;s has not used the red dye since 2021 and it is not in any of their products on the market, a spokesperson told CBS News. A number of popular American candies like Kit Kat, Reese&#8217;s and Kisses are made by the company. \u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nA spokesperson for Post Consumer Brands, which makes cereals such as Pebbles and Honey Bunches of Oats, said none of the company&#8217;s products use Red 3.\u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nPepsiCo, whose brands include snacks such as Ruffles and Doritos as well as drinks such as Gatorade and Mountain Dew, also does not currently use the dye.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nMars Wrigley, which listed Red 3 as an ingredient in one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitgum.com\/products\/orbit\/orbit-bubblemint-sugarfree-gum-55-piece-bottle-6-bottles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">its Orbit gum flavors<\/a> in the past, says none of the products in its portfolio currently rely on the dye. Other Mars brands include M&amp;M&#8217;s, Snickers and Skittles.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nJ&amp;J Snack Foods says they &#8220;proactively removed Red 3 from all products over six months ago,&#8221; including ICEE products that previously relied on the ingredient.
