{"id":104027,"date":"2026-10-13T21:35:13","date_gmt":"2026-10-13T21:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/irans-houthi-allies-deadly-attacks-on-saudi-arabia-create-a-difficult-dilemma-for-president-trump\/"},"modified":"2026-10-13T21:35:13","modified_gmt":"2026-10-13T21:35:13","slug":"irans-houthi-allies-deadly-attacks-on-saudi-arabia-create-a-difficult-dilemma-for-president-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/irans-houthi-allies-deadly-attacks-on-saudi-arabia-create-a-difficult-dilemma-for-president-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran&#8217;s Houthi allies&#8217; deadly attacks on Saudi Arabia create &#8220;a difficult dilemma for President Trump&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>London \u2014<\/em>\u00a0Yemen&#8217;s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have dramatically upped the stakes in the complex Middle East war, killing at least 20 people\u00a0<em>\u2014<\/em>\u00a0including an American\u00a0<em>\u2014<\/em>\u00a0and wounding hundreds more with <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-us-trump-saudi-arabia-houthi\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">strikes on Saudi Arabia&#8217;s airports<\/a><\/span> over the last week.<\/p>\n<p>The question is whether President Trump will order U.S. military action in support of Saudi Arabia, which has been at war with the rebels in Yemen for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump campaigned on ending wars, and he is likely aware, less than a month before the U.S. midterm elections, that opening a new U.S. front in the wider conflict sparked by the Feb. 28 joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran could be politically perilous.<\/p>\n<p>If he did, he could argue that it is both to protect the Saudis, as a key U.S. ally, and to stop the Iranian proxy group from threatening global shipping in the vital trade routes of the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump rejected a request last month by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to join in the kingdom&#8217;s strikes on the Houthis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/saudi-arabia-mbs-trump-houthis-yemen\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-absolute=\"true\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">two sources familiar with the matter told CBS News<\/a>. He came close to ordering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/trump-considered-striking-houthi-rebels-in-yemen-last-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">airstrikes against the group a week later<\/a>, but again declined.<\/p>\n<p>Asked Sunday if the U.S. would join Saudi strikes, however, the president replied: &#8220;We may. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-trump-us-elections-saudi-arabia-yemen-houthis\/#post-update-233591f2\" target=\"_blank\" data-absolute=\"true\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">We&#8217;re gonna look at it<\/a> \u2026 We&#8217;ll make a decision. Trump&#8217;s decision will likely depend on his broader assessment of the risks of further escalation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Oil prices<\/h2>\n<p>Oil prices may be one of the biggest factors in the president&#8217;s calculus. He has <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-promised-lower-prices-cost-living-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">vowed repeatedly to bring down prices at the pump<\/a><\/span>, which have soared as a result of the war with Iran impeding exports from major Persian Gulf energy producers.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration insists Iran has no control over the Strait of Hormuz, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-trump-us-oil-prices-yemen-red-sea-houthis-bab-el-mandeb\/#post-update-3de57449\" target=\"_blank\" data-absolute=\"true\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">more oil has been getting out<\/a> of the Middle East from the Persian Gulf in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>But the Houthis hold significant territory along Yemen&#8217;s Red Sea coast, which has enabled them to threaten vessels there and in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the southern gateway to the Red Sea and another key chokepoint for global energy supplies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed__float-wrap\">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\" data-ads=\"{\" extrawordcount=\"\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/27\/f232e5c6-a23e-451d-9afd-1f7971ac62f8\/map-bab-el-mandeb-strait-of-hormuz-1413205596.jpg#\" alt=\"Indo-Pacific major energy SLOCs, Sea Lines Of Communication, map \" width=\"8660\" height=\"5773\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2026\/03\/27\/f232e5c6-a23e-451d-9afd-1f7971ac62f8\/map-bab-el-mandeb-strait-of-hormuz-1413205596.jpg 1x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">A map shows major routes for energy resources and other trade from the Middle East to Asia, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Getty\/iStockphoto<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If the Houthis are able to control Yemen&#8217;s coastline, or enough of it to maintain their threat to shipping via the Bab el-Mandeb, it would put more pressure on energy flows, increasing the leverage Iran and its proxy groups have over global fuel prices.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Juneau, associate fellow at the Chatham House think tank&#8217;s Middle East and North Africa Program, told CBS News that this creates &#8220;a difficult dilemma for President Trump.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Direct U.S. involvement would likely lead to greater tension in the Red Sea, and therefore create more upward pressure on oil prices,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Should the U.S. refuse to become directly engaged, however, it will cause growing resentment and anger in Saudi Arabia, where feelings of abandonment caused by a widespread perception that the U.S. is failing to support its partner at a time of need are already acute.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Helping an ally<\/h2>\n<p>Despite long-running U.S. accusations that some members of the Saudi leadership <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/todd-blanche-911-documents\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">supported the al Qaeda Sept. 11 hijackers<\/a><\/span>, and the fallout from the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jamal-khashoggi-widow-hanan-elatr-khashoggi-interview-the-takeout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi<\/a><\/span> in 2018, Saudi Arabia has managed to maneuver itself into a position of relative international respectability over the last few years, pursuing a raft of economic reforms to attract foreign investment and building on its status as the world&#8217;s top oil exporter.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign money and visitors could dry up, however, if the Saudis prove incapable of defending themselves from Houthi attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saudi authorities regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-us-trump-saudi-arabia-houthi\/#post-update-a602c47c\" target=\"_blank\" data-absolute=\"true\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">report intercepting Houthi weapons<\/a>. But the death toll over the last week has exposed gaping holes in Saudi defenses. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/saudi-warning-system-stayed-silent-before-deadly-airport-attacks-2026-10-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters news agency<\/a> reported Tuesday that the Saudi system to warn civilians of a military attack went silent days before the latest series of deadly Houthi strikes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-deal-saudis-enrich-nuclear-program\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">fostered close business and defense ties with the Saudis<\/a><\/span>, and failing to come to the aid of an ally in need \u2014 especially one that hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/militarybases.com\/overseas\/saudi-arabia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five U.S. military bases<\/a>\u00a0\u2014   could make Washington appear to be an unreliable ally. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What do the Saudis want, and would it be effective?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Of all the military options at Mr. Trump&#8217;s disposal, airstrikes on Houthi targets &#8220;would make the greatest difference,&#8221; al-Dawsari told CBS News. The U.S. has, so far, only acknowledged offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/saudi-arabia-mbs-trump-houthis-yemen\/?ftag=CNM-16-10abf6d%3Fftag%3DYHF4eb9d17\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">intelligence and targeting support<\/a> to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The United States can also strengthen air and missile defense cooperation and help identify Houthi launch sites, weapons facilities, and command-and-control infrastructure,&#8221; al-Dawsari said.<\/p>\n<p>While the aim of U.S. strikes would likely be &#8220;to degrade the Houthis&#8217; ability to launch missiles and drones against Saudi Arabia and threaten shipping in the Red Sea,&#8221; al-Dawsari said &#8220;airstrikes alone will not eliminate the Houthi threat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The real question is whether American military action would be part of a broader effort to weaken the Houthis, or simply another round of limited strikes that they can absorb and recover from,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The risk is that the United States becomes drawn into a prolonged military campaign against the Houthis while already fighting Iran. Somebody should explain to them that I&#8217;m not running in the Elections, I&#8217;ve already won, IN A MASSIVE LANDSLIDE, but I&#8217;ll be there after the Elections, and I will never forget!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the French news agency AFP, meanwhile, Houthi political bureau member Mohammed al-Bukhaiti <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-us-trump-saudi-arabia-houthi\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-absolute=\"true\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">warned<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday that if the U.S. chooses to get &#8220;involved in the aggression against Yemen, we will not deliberate over the decision to respond, rather, there will be a swift and painful response targeting the U.S. and all its interests in the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Given the Pentagon&#8217;s recent <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-iran-war-ammunition-munition-shortage-shortfall-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">acknowledgment of U.S. munitions shortages<\/a><\/span> caused by the war with Iran, Mr. Trump will have to consider carefully the American military&#8217;s ability to defend against and respond to potential Houthi retaliatory
