Word of the arrest <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/japan-womans-murder-us-marine-okinawa-heinous-outrage\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">drew outrage<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/u-s-troops-on-okinawa-facing-curfew-alcohol-ban-after-marine-charged-with-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">enacted a two-day operational pause<\/a><\/span> after the Marine&#8217;s arrest to reinforce discipline and standards, followed by a monthlong midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew. <\/p>\n<p>Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Tuesday that &#8220;we began high-level, working-level consultations between Japan and the United States last week on what effective measures should be taken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Japanese government will continue to do everything in its power both to address this case and to ensure that it does not happen again,&#8221; she told a legislative committee session. <\/p>\n<p>Motegi spoke by phone over the weekend with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who offered his &#8220;sincere condolences&#8221; over the alleged crime and pledged U.S. cooperation in the investigation. <\/p>\n<p>Crimes committed by U.S. personnel have long been a thorn in relations between the close security allies.<\/p>\n<p>A Japanese court sentenced a U.S. Marine accused of choking and attempting to rape a woman in her 20s to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-marine-james-clayton-sexual-assault-japanese-court-7-year-sentence\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">seven years in prison last year<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, a former U.S. Marine and civilian military base worker was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/japan-ex-marine-kenneth-shinzato-life-rape-murder-okinawa-woman\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder<\/a><\/span> of a local woman in Okinawa.<\/p>\n<p>The United States has approximately 54,000 military personnel stationed in Japan, mostly on Okinawa.<\/p>\n<section
