He was 82.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Parton announced his death in a statement <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DollyParton\/status\/1896718434941173792\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">shared on social media<\/a>. No cause was given.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While his wife was a world-famous star, Mr. Dean was a private man who kept a low profile. In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/dolly-parton-opens-up-about-her-husband-carl-dean-and-how-some-people-dont-think-he-exists?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ETTopStories+%28Entertainment+Tonight%3A+Breaking+News%29\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight<\/a>, Ms. Parton said her husband had never wanted to be in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s just not who he is,\u201d Ms. Parton said. \u201cHe\u2019s like, a quiet, reserved person and he figured if he ever got out there in that, he\u2019d never get a minute\u2019s peace and he\u2019s right about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dean was born to Virginia Bates Dean, known as Ginny, and Edgar Henry Dean, according to Ms. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/dollyparton.com\/front-porch-stories\/dolly-and-carls-50th-wedding-anniversary\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Parton\u2019s website<\/a>. He lived in East Ridge, Tenn., as a child, Ms. Parton <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.local3news.com\/local-news\/dolly-parton-so-we-thought-ringgold\/article_19d09b19-ec6b-570c-9ff6-81791a464969.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told a local news channel in Chattanooga, Tenn.<\/a> While Ms. Parton became a country star, he pursued a quiet life owning an asphalt-paving business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The couple met outside the WishyWashy Laundromat the day she <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1979\/03\/08\/archives\/dolly-partons-city-place-dolly-partons-city-place.html\" title=\"\">moved to Nashville in 1964<\/a>, according to Ms. Parton\u2019s website, when Ms. Parton was 18 and Mr. Dean was 21. They married two years later on Memorial Day in 1966 in Ringgold, Ga., with only Ms. Parton\u2019s mother, a preacher and his wife in attendance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Parton and Mr. Dean lived on a farm outside Nashville for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Parton\u2019s 1973 hit song \u201cJolene\u201d was inspired by a bank teller who took interest in her husband in the early days of their marriage, she said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2008\/10\/09\/95520570\/dolly-partons-jolene-still-haunts-singers\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in an interview<\/a> with National Public Radio in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention,\u201d Ms. Parton said in the interview. \u201cIt was kinda like a running joke between us \u2014 when I was saying, \u2018Hell, you\u2019re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don\u2019t believe we\u2019ve got that kind of money.\u2019 So it\u2019s really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Parton has said her longtime husband inspired several other songs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Early in her career, the song \u201cJust Because I\u2019m a Woman\u201d described the disappointment of a man who had married someone he believed to be \u201can angel\u201d but had learned she was more complex.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/si\/podcast\/254-dolly-parton-how-to-make-decisions-even-if-they\/id1564530722?i=1000633172998\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">podcast interview<\/a> in 2023, Ms. Parton said that about eight months into their marriage, Mr. Dean \u201cstarted asking me questions about my past, and I said, \u2018Now, I don\u2019t want to lie to you because I\u2019m a pretty open, honest person, so don\u2019t ask me nothing you don\u2019t want the truth about.\u2019 Anyway, I told the truth and he wasn\u2019t too happy about that and then I wrote that song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her 2012 love ballad \u201cFrom Here to the Moon and Back\u201d was also inspired by Mr. Dean, according to her website, and she told <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Culture\/dolly-parton-talks-key-lasting-marriage-husbands-influence\/story?id=104657379\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ABC News<\/a> that her 2023 album \u201cRockstar\u201d was influenced by his love of rock music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFrom the time I met him in 1964 \u2014 he just had rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll blasting. That\u2019s his music,\u201d she told ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016 by renewing their vows, an event that inspired her album \u201cPure &amp; Simple,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/dolly-parton-how-she-fell-in-love-all-over-again-with-pure-and-simple-248241\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ms. Parton told Rolling Stone in 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dean did not typically do interviews. So rarely did Mr. Dean enter the spotlight that at certain points rumors swirled that the two were not actually married, which Ms. Parton always dispelled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey think I just made him up,\u201d Ms. Parton said in a television <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1070134807858645\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">interview in 2024<\/a>, referring to Mr. Dean. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the same interview, Ms. Parton recounted the story of going to her first awards dinner with Mr. Dean, who begrudgingly attended but was \u201cabsolutely miserable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After that, \u201cwe got in the car and he said, \u2018You know what, I want you to do really well,\u2019\u201d Ms. Parton recalled, adding that he told her he \u201cain\u2019t ever going to more of them damn things.\u201d She said, with a chuckle, that she stopped asking him to attend her events after that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Parton has been asked in interviews over the years about wanting children. The couple talked and \u201cdreamed about it\u201d after they first got married, Ms. Parton <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2014\/dec\/06\/dolly-parton-more-to-me-than-big-hair-phoney-stuff\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told The Guardian<\/a>, but it wasn\u2019t meant to be, she said. \u201cNow that we\u2019re older? We\u2019re glad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dean was one of the stabilizing forces in Ms. Parton\u2019s life, Ms. Parton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cGod has been good to me,\u201d she said. \u201cHe gave me Carl Dean.
