Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said on social media the plan to use an Army firing squad was recommended by Hegseth and approved by President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News has reached out to Hasan&#8217;s attorney for comment.<\/p>\n<p>A former Army psychiatrist, Hasan was convicted of murdering 13 people and injuring more than 30 in a 2013 court-martial. Hasan<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/maj-hasan-evidence-will-show-i-am-the-shooter\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"> acknowledged at trial<\/a><\/span> that he was responsible for the shooting, claiming he opened fire on fellow members of the Army in an attempt to protect Islamic insurgents from U.S. military forces. He was<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-77230d3f77934e69be6dabed7e6c588a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> sentenced to death<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hasan&#8217;s case could mark the military&#8217;s first execution of an American service member since 1961, when a soldier was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/07\/28\/justice\/military-execution-soldier-profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> hanged<\/a> for raping and attempting to murder an 11-year-old girl.<\/p>\n<p>It would also mark a rare use of a firing squad. The method was used in South Carolina three times last year, marking the<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/south-carolina-firing-squad-execution-brad-sigmon\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"> first firing squad executions since 2010<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The decision by Hegseth comes after a lengthy appeals process for Hasan. He chose to represent himself at trial, and in an unusual course of events, he\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/hasan-i-would-still-be-a-martyr-if-executed\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">clashed with his own court-appointed standby attorneys<\/a><\/span>, who worried that Hasan was intentionally seeking the death penalty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hasan<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/24\/24-5225\/321399\/20240801144159941_Hasan%20SCOTUS%20Petition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> asked the Supreme Court<\/a> to review his case in 2024, arguing the judge had violated his right to a public trial by clearing the public from the courtroom before discussing some of his issues with the attorneys.
