Israel\u2019s devastating response that unfolded over the next 15 months, a war that killed tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, internally displaced nearly the entire population of more than two million and left the territory in ruins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOct. 7 of course changed everything,\u201d Dr. Lipstadt said in Jerusalem in January just before her term ended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, Dr. Lipstadt is back teaching at Emory University as a Distinguished Professor and is writing a memoir about her experiences serving the former president. She turned down an offer to teach a course next year at Columbia University. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/why-i-wont-teach-at-columbia\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">opinion piece<\/a> published on Monday in The Free Press, Dr. Lipstadt said she did not want to \u201cserve as a prop or a fig leaf,\u201d or put herself or her students at risk, after what she described as the campus administration\u2019s weak response to anti-Israel protesters who broke regulations and harassed other students. Columbia, in a statement, said that Dr. Lipstadt had been \u201cinformally\u201d invited to consider teaching a course and that when she signaled her intent \u201cnot to continue the conversation,&#8221; interim Columbia President Katrina Armstrong \u201creached out to personally engage her and share her personal commitment to combating antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Dr. Lipstadt\u2019s interview in January, reflecting on her <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/18\/us\/politics\/antisemitism-jews-israel-deborah-lipstadt-biden.html\" title=\"\">two years<\/a> as Mr. Biden\u2019s envoy, she said the 2023 attack on Israel unleashed a chain of events that brought what she called \u201ca tsunami of antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She said people were accusing Israel of genocide online as rescue workers were still <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/10\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-kibbutz-kfar-azza.html?searchResultPosition=2\" title=\"\">gathering the bodies of Oct. 7 victims<\/a> from Israeli communities near the Gaza border. And there were immediate displays of support and defenses of Hamas as soon as Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the months that followed, as death, distress and destruction mounted in Gaza, pro-Palestinian demonstrations swept through American university campuses and cities around the world, sometimes with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/09\/nyregion\/nyu-antisemitism-settlement.html?searchResultPosition=8\" title=\"\">antisemitic overtones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The number of antisemitic episodes in the United States surged to the highest level ever recorded, according to the Anti-Defamation League, a rights organization, with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/resources\/press-release\/over-10000-antisemitic-incidents-recorded-us-oct-7-2023-according-adl\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">about triple the number of cases<\/a> reported to the group in the year after the Oct. 7 attack compared with a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/publication\/2024\/experiences-and-perceptions-antisemitism-third-survey\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">survey of Jews in the European Union<\/a> carried out in the months before the attack found that 90 percent of respondents had encountered antisemitism online in the previous year, 56 percent had encountered offline antisemitism from people they knew and 37 percent were harassed for being Jewish during the year before. Some European Jewish organizations <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/news\/2024\/jews-europe-still-face-high-levels-antisemitism\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported an increase<\/a> of more than fourfold <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/news\/2024\/jews-europe-still-face-high-levels-antisemitism\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in antisemitic incidents<\/a> after the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Antisemitism, an age-old curse, was always simmering, said Dr. Lipstadt, 77, who is herself Jewish. But after Oct. 7, \u201cit suddenly became OK, almost normalized,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Trump White House <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/01\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-takes-forceful-and-unprecedented-steps-to-combat-anti-semitism\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">has accused<\/a> the Biden administration of turning a blind eye to a \u201ccampaign of intimidation, vandalism and violence on the campuses and streets of America\u201d by \u201cpro-Hamas aliens and left-wing radicals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Lipstadt wrote in The Free Press that President Biden did condemn the violence on campus, often unequivocally, \u201cBut there were too many moments that were met with silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Biden administration in 2023 released the first U.S. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/25\/us\/politics\/biden-antisemitism-plan-hate-crimes.html\" title=\"\">National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism<\/a> calling for a bipartisan effort to get government, law enforcement and schools to stanch the spread of hate online. And in 2024, the United States led 38 countries and four international bodies in outlining best practices for tackling Jew hatred known as the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/global-guidelines-for-countering-antisemitism\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In January, President Trump signed an executive order vowing to more strongly protect American Jews from antisemitism. It allows for the cancellation of visas and deportation of foreign students who sympathize with Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that has governed Gaza for most of the past two decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel has leveled accusations of antisemitism against countries, foreign leaders and institutions over issues including the International Criminal Court\u2019s issuing of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/22\/world\/middleeast\/israel-netanyahu-icc-warrant.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\">arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, and a genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice. They were accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"> Dr. Lipstadt described antisemitism as the oldest continuous hatred, so deeply rooted that it is almost impossible to eradicate. She saw her job as a chance to call it out and use diplomacy and the levers of government to quell the ancient prejudice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dani Dayan, the chairman of Yad Vashem, World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem, said Dr. Lipstadt provided global resonance to the issue. But unfortunately her assignment \u201cdid not encompass domestic U.S. antisemitism at a time when it was much needed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the summer of 2022, shortly after taking up her role, Dr. Lipstadt made a counterintuitive choice for her first trip abroad by heading to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The wealthy Gulf kingdom has no formal diplomatic relations with Israel. But less than two years before, two of its Gulf neighbors, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, established full ties with Israel. And there was talk of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/03\/us\/politics\/trump-mohammed-bin-salman.html\" title=\"\">Saudi Arabia soon following suit<\/a> \u2014 a possibility that Mr. Trump is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/23\/us\/politics\/trump-us-saudi-arabia-investment-trade.html?searchResultPosition=10\" title=\"\">again pursuing<\/a> in his second term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI went there to make a statement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her pitch was that regardless of their position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, \u201cantisemitism is something that is wrong and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After her Saudi visit, she went on to the United Arab Emirates, where her first meeting with the president, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, ran long, lasting 95 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Toward the end of her term, Dr. Lipstadt returned to the two Gulf Arab nations. But the Gaza war and its ripples around the region had engendered a new hesitancy around the subject of antisemitism, she said, with Gulf leaders highly conscious of the anti-Israel sentiment among their people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And an already fraught debate about the line between legitimate criticism of Israeli policies and antisemitism had sharpened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the same time, the atmosphere on American college campuses was charged.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many Jewish students were saying they felt unsafe. At the same time, other students <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/20\/us\/stanford-antisemitism-muslims-report.html?searchResultPosition=2\" title=\"\">complained of anti-Muslim bias<\/a> and the stifling of free speech among pro-Palestinian students and faculty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Dr. Lipstadt said she had no trouble distinguishing between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/holocaustremembrance.com\/resources\/working-definition-antisemitism\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">working definition of antisemitism<\/a>, adopted in 2016 by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and endorsed by more than 40 countries, includes manifestations of \u201cthe targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity,\u201d but not criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If all such criticism were deemed antisemitic, Dr. Lipstadt said, then many Israelis would be considered antisemites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe national sport of Israel is not football,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s criticism of the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Criticism becomes antisemitic when one questions the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state or singles out Israel and applies a double standard compared to other countries, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, people are either engaging in overt antisemitism while claiming they are only criticizing Israeli policy, or conversely, calling normal criticism of Israel antisemitic, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBoth are illegitimate,\u201d said Dr. Lipstadt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She said she considered the genocide case in The Hague to be antisemitic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A special U.N. committee <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2024\/11\/un-special-committee-finds-israels-warfare-methods-gaza-consistent-genocide\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">concluded last year<\/a> that Israel\u2019s military campaign in Gaza was \u201cconsistent with the characteristics of genocide,\u201d citing the high death toll and accusations of Israel\u2019s use of starvation as a weapon of war. Amnesty International has also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/12\/amnesty-international-concludes-israel-is-committing-genocide-against-palestinians-in-gaza\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">concluded that Israel committed genocide<\/a> against the Palestinians in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several countries, including Belgium, Ireland, Mexico and Spain, joined the genocide case initiated by South Africa against Israel in the world\u2019s top court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There is no debate that the suffering of civilians in Gaza and the level of destruction there has been horrible, Dr. Lipstadt said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBut is it genocide?\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t fit the definition of genocide,\u201d she added. \u201cI mean, there\u2019s got to be an intent to wipe out a culture or people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion
