Mamdani has long defended his stance, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/zohran-mamdani-defends-plan-to-combat-antisemitism\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">saying<\/a><\/span> criticism of Israel is distinct from antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s statement by Mamdani began by calling it a &#8220;profoundly painful&#8221; day for many New Yorkers, noting Hamas&#8217; &#8220;horrific war crimes&#8221; <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/israel-gaza-conflict\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">on Oct. 7, 2023<\/a><\/span>, including the killing of about 1,200 people in Israel and the taking of more than 250 hostages. He added: &#8220;We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mayor then shifted to criticizing Israel for its &#8220;devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza&#8221; \u2014 noting the more than 74,000 deaths recorded in the enclave, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-gaza-iran-israel-yemen-september-27-2026-96b100178557a28f51e2ad4f74539699\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them \u2014 all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes,&#8221; Mamdani said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment,&#8221; Mamdani added.<\/p>\n<p>Several Democratic elected officials blasted Mamdani&#8217;s statement, arguing it was too focused on Israel rather than Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDWStweets\/status\/2107911393835995431?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused Mamdani<\/a> of &#8220;desecrating the memory of murdered, innocent Jews,&#8221; Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJoshG\/status\/2107951458502984161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the mayor was &#8220;blam[ing] the victims&#8221; of the Oct. 7 attack, and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StevenFulop\/status\/2107931064861970473?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called the statement<\/a> &#8220;inappropriate and unnecessarily inflammatory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Richie Torres, a Democrat who represents the Bronx, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RitchieTorres\/status\/2107912925369303053?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">penned an X post<\/a> that did not name Mamdani, but said: &#8220;Perhaps, for just one day\u2014October 7th\u2014the critics of Israel could take a vacation from their hysterical hatred of the world&#8217;s only Jewish State and find it within themselves to express condolences for the thousands of Israelis murdered, maimed, mutilated, raped, and abducted at the hands of Hamas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Daniel Goldman \u2014 <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/dan-goldman-brad-lander-nyc-democratic-primary-results\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">who lost<\/a><\/span> a Democratic primary in his Manhattan and Brooklyn district to Mamdani-endorsed Brad Lander earlier this year \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/danielsgoldman\/status\/2107906454803939375?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called the mayor&#8217;s message<\/a> &#8220;reprehensible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the guise of &#8216;grieving&#8217; with those mourning that day, Mayor Mamdani asserts as fact hotly disputed allegations that he knows full well will offend and further upset those same people he pretends to grieve with,&#8221; Goldman wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>Lander, the Democratic nominee in Goldman&#8217;s deep-blue district, <a href=\"https:\/\/bradlander.substack.com\/p\/three-years-later-we-still-havent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote a statement of his own<\/a> on Tuesday that condemned Hamas but argued against the &#8220;flattening of empathy.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can mourn for those lost on October 7th and still acknowledge the enormous imbalance of power between Israel and the Palestinians,&#8221; Lander wrote in a post on Substack.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani also faced pushback from the Anti-Defamation League, whose CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, is a frequent critic of the mayor. Greenblatt <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JGreenblattADL\/status\/2107828938659508440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on social media that in Mamdani&#8217;s statement, &#8220;not once do you say &#8216;Jews.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are weaponizing a day meant for mourning the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust to recycle your usual antizionist talking points,&#8221; Greenblatt wrote.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovMikeHuckabee\/status\/2107862535575589221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> Mamdani&#8217;s statement an &#8220;outrageous &amp; disgusting rant,&#8221; while Ofir Akunis, Israeli consul general in New York, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Ofir_Akunis\/status\/2107934387933507679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called it<\/a> a &#8220;disgrace, shame, and insult to the memory of those who were murdered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBS News has reached out to Mamdani&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani&#8217;s stance on Israel has drawn intense scrutiny \u2014 and applause from his allies \u2014 since he began his unexpected ascent to the mayor&#8217;s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the 2025 Democratic mayoral primary, Mamdani vowed that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited New York City, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-mayor-zohran-mamdani-israeli-prime-minister-benjamin-netanyahu\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">he would seek<\/a><\/span> Netanyahu&#8217;s arrest on an International Criminal Court warrant accusing him of war crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, Mamdani conceded that the city did not have the power to execute the warrant. The U.S. is not a party to the global treaty that created the ICC and generally does not recognize its authority. Israel has called the war crimes allegations &#8220;absurd and false.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When Netanyahu visited the city last month to address the United Nations General Assembly, he <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/netanyahu-mamdani-un-general-assembly\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">accused Mamdani of antisemitism<\/a><\/span> and said &#8220;many Jews no longer feel safe in New York.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shame on you for distorting the facts, shame on you for inverting victim and aggressor, shame on you for spitting in the face of truth,&#8221; Netanyahu said.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani has long rejected allegations that his strong criticisms of Israel have fueled antisemitism, and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/zohran-mamdani-antisemitism-new-york-city-upper-west-side-stabbings\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">says<\/a><\/span> the city &#8220;has no room for hate or bigotry of any kind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Mamdani <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/zohran-mamdani-combat-antisemitism-plan-nyc\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">unveiled a plan to combat antisemitism<\/a><\/span>, including a dedicated antisemitism hotline and funding to upgrade security at synagogues.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by CBS News New York about the criticism he has faced and whether he believes he should dial back his statements, Mamdani <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/zohran-mamdani-defends-plan-to-combat-antisemitism\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said last month<\/a><\/span>: &#8220;I think criticism of a prime minister, criticism of government policy is distinct from bigotry of a people. \u2026 And what my job is to ensure is not only that we are proud of being the most Jewish city in the United
