Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/maria-elvira-salazar-trump-immigration-ad-gone-too-far\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">raised eyebrows last month<\/a><\/span> when she taped a campaign ad warning President Trump the Hispanic voters who helped him secure a second term &#8220;feel betrayed.&#8221; She said some of the administration&#8217;s tactics have &#8220;gone too far,&#8221; pointing to data that shows <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ice-arrests-record-high-july-new-data\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">many ICE detainees lack criminal records<\/a><\/span>. Other Republicans have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/09\/30\/congress\/republican-on-ice-maybe-were-doing-something-wrong-here-01098256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also raised concerns<\/a>, including Sen. Jim Justice of West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Salazar&#8217;s comments, Homan said: &#8220;Give me an example of where we went too far. That&#8217;s a pretty bold statement to make.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Homan said the Trump administration is still prioritizing people who it views as public safety threats, but anybody who is in the U.S. illegally is &#8220;deportable by federal law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re in the country illegally, you got a problem. You shouldn&#8217;t be here,&#8221; Homan said, later adding that &#8220;everybody we arrest has an opportunity to see a judge and plead their case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He argued much of the criticism is &#8220;about hate on this administration and taking on Trump,&#8221; pointing to ICE&#8217;s high arrest and deportation figures <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/united-states-presidential-election-political-news-events-dc23f3d79b8e4abc8f20a0085ae50fcd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during the Obama administration<\/a>, when Homan was a senior official at the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Pressed on the growing GOP criticism, Homan said: &#8220;I wish they&#8217;d sit down and talk to ICE. I wish they&#8217;d find out: What is ICE doing? How are they doing it? And educate themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has drawn scrutiny not just for the rapid surge in arrests, but also for the government&#8217;s immigration tactics \u2014 including <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/doordash-driver-shot-ice-custody-alleged-assault-wilber-rafael-garces-perez\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a series of shootings by ICE agents<\/a><\/span> during <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ice-agents-halt-vehicle-stops-after-shootings-maine-texas\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">traffic stops<\/a><\/span>, two of which <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/ice-shootings-body-cameras-democratic-senators\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">resulted in migrants being killed<\/a><\/span> over the summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two U.S. citizens \u2014 <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/renee-good-killed-ice-minneapolis-what-we-know\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Renee Good<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/alex-pretti-shooting-fbi-investigation\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Alex Pretti<\/a><\/span> \u2014 were also fatally shot by immigration agents during a crackdown in the Minneapolis area earlier this year. Good&#8217;s family <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/renee-good-family-civil-lawsuit-against-federal-government-ice-killing-minneapolis\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">filed lawsuits against federal officials this week<\/a><\/span>, naming Homan as a defendant in one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Good&#8217;s death earlier in his interview with CBS News, Homan called the situation &#8220;tragic,&#8221; but said he is not involved in the investigation into the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to see any tragedies happen,&#8221; Homan said. &#8220;I wish Renee Good was alive today. I wish that incident [didn&#8217;t] happen, but it happened, and it&#8217;s being investigated.
