And over the summer, two models that were being tested by OpenAI broke out of their isolated testing environment, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hugging-face-hack-openai-rogue-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">gained internet access<\/a><\/span> and breached another company called Hugging Face.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s rival Anthropic\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/anthropic-claude-gained-unauthorized-access-to-real-world-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">also disclosed in July<\/a><\/span> that its model Claude &#8220;gained unauthorized access&#8221; to outside organizations during testing. Earlier this month, Anthropic said <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/anthropic-ai-claude-biological-weapons-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">it blocked scientists<\/a><\/span> from using Claude &#8220;in ways that could support biological weapons development,&#8221; and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ai-us-adversaries-target-military-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">disrupted<\/a><\/span> an &#8220;Iran-nexus threat actor&#8221; that tried to use the model to generate targeting recommendations for U.S. naval forces. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ex-Anthropic and OpenAI researcher <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/anthropic-researcher-jacob-coxon-ai-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Jacob Coxon<\/a><\/span> publicly warned earlier this month that artificial intelligence &#8220;could kill us all by the end of the decade,&#8221; and argued that major frontier AI companies aren&#8217;t doing enough to manage the risk.<\/p>\n<p>Some executives have called for guardrails on the development of powerful AI to manage some of the safety risks. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/anthropic-ceo-dario-amodei-calls-slowdown-ai-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said<\/a><\/span> the industry needs to &#8220;slow down&#8221; and subject its models to external evaluation, an idea that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/2098811563415150910?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed<\/a>. Political figures from both major parties <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bernie-sanders-steve-bannon-bipartisan-ai-pro-human-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have also backed limits on AI development<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Others have rejected calls for an AI slowdown, arguing that the risks are overstated and restrictions on AI research could cause China to outpace the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose company designs the chips that power advanced AI technology, called warnings about AI driving humans to extinction &#8220;doomsday narratives&#8221; in an <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jensen-huang-nvidia-rejects-ai-extinction-warnings\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">interview with CBS News<\/a><\/span>. Venture capitalist David Sacks, a former Trump administration AI and cryptocurrency czar, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/david-sacks-ai-developers-safety-regulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said<\/a><\/span> any safety risks should be managed by the AI companies themselves, and while caution is warranted, the warnings are &#8220;becoming a panic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>President Trump has dismissed calls for stronger guardrails, touting the economic benefits wrought by the AI boom and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-dismisses-ai-regulation-tech-slowdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">calling worries<\/a><\/span> that the technology could endanger humanity a &#8220;hoax.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-johnson-ai-executives-meeting-anthropic-openai\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">are set to meet
