There has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/oglobo.globo.com\/cultura\/noticia\/2024\/11\/20\/alem-de-fernanda-torres-confira-as-estrelas-com-fotos-mais-curtidas-em-ensaio-da-academia-do-oscar.ghtml\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">intense online support<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZAMENZA\/status\/1876142925224296762\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">blanket media coverage<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LulaOficial\/status\/1894418488674193849\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">screenings by the president<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The result is a feeling of national pride more commonly reserved for the national soccer team. That is because, to many across this country of 200 million, Brazil\u2019s first major Oscar would represent a meaningful validation of a culture that has long awaited its proper due.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI know French culture, I know American culture, I know Russian culture, German culture, Italian culture, but they don\u2019t know much about Brazilian culture,\u201d Ms. Torres, 59, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DCsMlmWO5oK\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in a recent interview<\/a> that went viral in Brazil. \u201cWe lack this communication with the world, and on the other hand, Brazil feels sorry that the world doesn\u2019t know what we know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For generations, Brazil has given rise to a vast, vibrant tapestry of art, music, literature and film \u2014 some of it masterful and much of it deeply original \u2014 that has been widely celebrated inside this immense nation and hardly known outside it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yes, the Brazilian actress Carmen Miranda and her fruit hat became a Hollywood sensation in the 1940s \u2014 though in part by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1991\/10\/20\/archives\/pop-music-caricature-and-conqueror-pride-and-shame.html\" title=\"\">reinforcing Latino stereotypes<\/a> \u2014 and then Bossa Nova broke through in the 1950s. But since then, Brazilian culture has often been defined abroad by soccer, samba and Carnival \u2014 despite it being <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/18\/obituaries\/clarice-lispector-overlooked.html\" title=\"\">much<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/19\/arts\/design\/brazilian-artist-chico-exhibition.html\" title=\"\">much<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/04\/arts\/music\/brazil-jazz-music.html\" title=\"\">more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One obstacle has been language. The Brazilian pop star <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/07\/arts\/music\/anitta-versions-of-me.html\" title=\"\">Anitta<\/a> has recently begun reaching a broader audience, but only by singing in Spanish and English.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBrazil is continental in size, but we speak Portuguese, the language of a small country, a language barely recognized in the world,\u201d Caetano Veloso, the Brazilian music legend, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Veloso has created more beauty with that language than almost anyone. My colleague, the longtime New York Times music critic Jon Pareles, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/01\/29\/movies\/critic-s-notebook-a-global-heartbeat-on-cd-s.html\" title=\"\">has called<\/a> Mr. Veloso \u201cone of the greatest songwriters of the century,\u201d while David Byrne of Talking Heads <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/oglobo.globo.com\/cultura\/musica\/noticia\/2022\/08\/david-byrne-descrever-caetano-veloso-e-impossivel.ghtml\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">has said<\/a> of him: \u201cWhen people ask me which musicians I admire, he is always first on the list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It seems then that another challenge has not been the quality of Brazil\u2019s art, but its exposure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese are all avowed fans of Brazilian cinema. Yet Mr. Scorsese said he had to discover it in a museum. He then became \u201cobsessed,\u201d he said, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q1EMVVpUUuE\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">calling<\/a> the 1969 Brazilian film \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antonio_das_Mortes\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Antonio das Mortes<\/a>\u201d by Glauber Rocha \u201cone of the high points of my film-going experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kurt Cobain and Beck said they were inspired by the Brazilian psychedelic rock band <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/07\/15\/arts\/music\/15roht.html\" title=\"\">Os Mutantes<\/a>. Paul Simon and Sting have praised the Brazilian singer <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/01\/arts\/music\/milton-nascimento-esperanza-spalding.html\" title=\"\">Milton Nascimento<\/a>. And Stevie Wonder is a fan and frequent collaborator with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/10\/05\/arts\/pop-jazz-the-sophisticated-spontaneity-of-gilberto-gil.html\" title=\"\">Gilberto Gil<\/a>, whom these pages have also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/03\/22\/arts\/music\/22gil.html\" title=\"\">called<\/a> \u201cone of the world\u2019s great songwriters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2020, the American author Dave Eggers discovered a new translation of the 1881 novel \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/16\/books\/review-posthumous-memoirs-bras-cubas-machado-de-assis.html\" title=\"\">The Posthumous Memoirs of Br\u00e1s Cubas<\/a>\u201d by Machado de Assis, the inventive Brazilian writer. Mr. Eggers was stunned and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/second-read\/rediscovering-one-of-the-wittiest-books-ever-written\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cIt is a glittering masterwork and an unmitigated joy to read, but, for no good reason at all, almost no English speakers in the twenty-first century have read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Well, it may not be a <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">good<\/em> reason, but the reality is that, for generations, the West has generally viewed the cultural output from poorer countries as less relevant or important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That is in part why Brazilians have largely been relegated to the \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/nov\/03\/grammy-awards-rename-world-music-category-best-global\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">global music<\/a>\u201d and Latin categories of the Grammys, and the foreign-language category of the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This year has brought exceptions. At the Grammys, Mr. Nascimento was nominated for best jazz album with the American jazz musician Esperanza Spalding. Yet at the ceremony, organizers seated him far in the back while putting Ms. Spalding up front, prompting her to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hashtagpop\/reel\/DFmEgZ_xuZ6\/?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">protest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the Oscars, Ms. Torres is the second Brazilian to ever receive a best acting nomination. The first? Her mother, 25 years ago. Fernanda Montenegro, Brazil\u2019s most celebrated actress, was nominated in 1999 for her role in \u201cCentral Station,\u201d a Brazilian film by Walter Salles, the same director behind \u201cI\u2019m Still Here.\u201d She lost to Gwyneth Paltrow, a decision that is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/09\/movies\/readers-oscar-snubs.html\" title=\"\">decried in Brazil to this day<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now Brazil prays for redemption, including with the prize for best picture. It is only the second time a Latin American film has received the nomination, after the 2018 Mexican film \u201cRoma,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/25\/business\/media\/green-book-spike-lee-reaction.html\" title=\"\">which lost<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The recognition \u201crepresents a lot for Brazil,\u201d Mr. Veloso said. \u201cWe tend to exalt our country in songs, but we have a very large inferiority complex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Brazilians often call that phenomenon the \u201ccomplexo de vira-lata,\u201d roughly translated as the \u201cmutt complex,\u201d a term <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ufrgs.br\/cdrom\/rodrigues03\/rodrigues3.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">coined<\/a> in the 1950s by the Brazilian playwright <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/12\/17\/theater\/theater-reawakening-the-giant-of-brazilian-theater.html\" title=\"\">Nelson Rodrigues<\/a>, originally referring to Brazil\u2019s mixed-race identity and its tendency to view itself as inferior to richer nations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPerhaps because our European colonizers always saw us as an inferior people, this stigma has stuck to the country\u2019s soul,\u201d said Fernando Meirelles, director of the 2002 film \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/01\/17\/movies\/film-review-boys-soldiering-in-an-army-of-crime.html\" title=\"\">City of God<\/a>,\u201d one of the few other Brazilian movies to earn an Oscar nomination, including for best director. \u201cTo this day, we depend on external approval to deal with our low self-esteem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even Ms. Torres admitted that she has internalized such views. When asked about her fellow nominees after her Golden Globe victory last month, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Jft4LmbSiio?si=RhmnMJP6nHdvROGm&amp;t=57\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">she responded<\/a>, laughing, \u201cEverybody deserves it. Everybody. So I don\u2019t know why they chose this street dog that speaks Portuguese.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Brazil, millions believe she deserves the awards \u2014 and are showing it.
