He was 59.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Capone\u2019s death was reported online Sunday by close family. A cause of death was not immediately revealed. Capone had been living in the Las Vegas area since 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Along with the Luniz\u2019 \u201cI Got 5 on It,\u201d Capone produced many regional hip-hop classics that remain in regular rotation. Those include 3xKrazy\u2019s \u201cKeep It on the Real,\u201d Mac Dre\u2019s \u201cFire\u201d and \u201cNot My Job,\u201d Celly Cel\u2019s \u201cIt\u2019s Goin\u2019 Down,\u201d Devin the Dude\u2019s \u201cSticky Green\u201d and E-40\u2019s \u201cRing It.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><iframe title=\"I Got 5 On It\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/agJ6zyTB5ng?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"I Got 5 On It\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/agJ6zyTB5ng?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Across his career, Capone produced or worked with a who\u2019s-who of Bay Area rap, including the Jacka, Dru Down, The Click, Conscious Daughters, Mac Mall, Messy Marv, Andre Nickatina, Spice 1, San Quinn and dozens of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a beatmaker steeped in the funk and soul of the 1970s, Capone\u2019s rap production emphasized the the first downbeat of each measure, accompanied by exaggerated bass tones and live instruments. Along with his charting hits, his sound found receptive ears in Houston, Texas, where he worked with rapper Scarface, Devin the Dude and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Capone was born Anthony Douglas Gilmour in Berkeley, and was raised in North Oakland, near Bushrod Park. His family home was filled with the music of the era: Earth Wind &amp; Fire, the Crusaders, Parliament, Kool &amp; the Gang, Curtis Mayfield, Donald Byrd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While attending Berkeley High School, he learned how to DJ using a friend\u2019s turntables. Before long, he began DJing at events \u2014 parties at fraternity houses, or at the Lake Merritt boathouse \u2014 with friend Nick Peace, who would become a notable hip-hop producer himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the mid-1980s, after high school, Capone began making beats with four-track cassette recorders, drum machines, turntables and tape decks. Shortly after buying his first Technics 1200 turntable, he committed himself to making music instead of hustling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While Bay Area rap had been famously independent, some of Capone\u2019s earliest work was commissioned by major labels for the Oakland group Capital Tax and R&amp;B trio SWV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 1993, fate intervened. Capone reconnected with a friend from Berkeley High, Mike Marshall, who\u2019d had a hit song with \u201cRumors,\u201d by his group Timex Social Club. The two were at Capone\u2019s house one day when members of the Luniz happened to visit, bringing song ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the songs, in a rough sketch, was \u201cI Got 5 On It.\u201d On the spot, Marshall wrote the melody for the hook, Capone created a beat based on the Club Nouveau song \u201cWhy You Treat Me So Bad,\u201d and before long, the track was laid down in the studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Released in 1995, \u201cI Got 5 On It\u201d was an immediate hit in the Bay Area, and reached the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot 100. Gradually, the song grew to enjoy global recognition, aided by a remix featuring Dru Down, Spice-1, E-40, Shock G, and Richie Rich. In 2019, a slow, brooding remake of Capone\u2019s beat was utilized by director Jordan Peele in the horror film Us.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<a title=\"Hip-Hop hats, buckets, snapbacks, beanies.\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64516 size-full\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hip-hop-hats.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64516 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hip-hop-hats.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After chart success, Capone kept working. Through working with Oakland rapper Seagram, signed to Houston\u2019s Rap-a-Lot Records, Capone met the producer Mike Dean, who suggested he join upcoming sessions for the rapper Scarface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The resulting album, 1997\u2019s The Untouchable, went platinum, with Capone\u2019s production work throughout. Tracks included the Rick James flip \u201cMary Jane,\u201d and \u201cSmile,\u201d a major hit featuring one of the last verses recorded by Tupac Shakur. (In his memoir Diary of a Madman, Scarface named Capone on a list of the all-time greatest producers, alongside Dr. Dre, Pharrell and Timbaland.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Capone also connected with Mac Dre in the late 1990s, going on to produce the Ohio Players-inspired single \u201cFire,\u201d the street classic \u201cNot My Job,\u201d the track \u201cGenie of the Lamp\u201d and others before Mac Dre\u2019s death in 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the 21st century, Capone stayed active among a cohort of artists, pushing himself to try new tempos and musical styles. Before his death, he had recently worked with the Punjabi rapper Kanwar. He also took a day job, working at a hospital, before retiring.
