Among those expected to take the stand is Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight, who was in the car with Shakur at the time of the shooting. Knight is the only other surviving witness to the murder. Other witnesses include former mayor of Las Vegas Oscar Goodman, Joe Lombardo, members of Shakur\u2019s family and Yusuf Jah, who co-authored a book with Davis called \u201cCompton Street Legend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 11page witness list filed by the state lists nearly 200 other witnesses which include expert witnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Duane \u201cKeffe D\u201d Davis, 63, faces a single count of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang in Shakur\u2019s death. He\u2019s been jailed since late 2023 and has pleaded not guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For decades, Shakur\u2019s unsolved killing has gripped hip-hop fans. He\u2019s considered one of the most influential rappers of all time with songs that speak to the human experience of love, heartache and familial relationships. When Shakur died, he was in the midst of a fierce battle for dominance in a music scene increasingly shaped by rival gangs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The trial, which is expected to last about a month, likely won\u2019t reveal who pulled the trigger. Instead, prosecutors hope to prove that Davis was the shot caller and provided the weapon. Gunfire came from the Cadillac that Davis was in, and he\u2019s one of the only people there that night who is still alive. Prosecutors say if Davis hadn\u2019t written explicitly about the killing, or talked about it in interviews, it\u2019s likely no one would have been charged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On Sept. 7, 1996, Shakur was in the passenger seat of a black BMW and Death Row Records co-founder Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight was driving. They had just watched Mike Tyson knock out Bruce Seldon and were headed to a nightclub where Shakur was scheduled to perform. But at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip, a white Cadillac pulled up beside them, and gunfire erupted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shakur was shot multiple times and died six days later, while Knight survived with minor injuries. Knight is serving a 28-year prison sentence for a fatal hit-and-run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The case went cold until Davis began making public statements about his involvement as a leader of the South Side Compton Crips. In 2019, he published a tell-all memoir. The book, along with interviews Davis gave, revived the police investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Davis\u2019 defense attorneys argue there is no evidence he directed the shooting and the state relies on witnesses who weren\u2019t there. The defense said Davis left the narcotics trade in 2009 and worked a steady job before illness forced him to retire in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For Shakur\u2019s family, the last 30 years have been exhausting and stressful, his stepbrother Maurice \u201cMopreme\u201d Shakur said. Sitting through the trial will be retraumatizing, Shakur said, but he\u2019s \u201ccautiously optimistic\u201d justice will come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI hope that the trial is fair, and we find out the truth,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hundreds of pages of grand jury transcripts portray Tupac Shakur\u2019s shooting as a culmination of a longstanding feud between rival record labels \u2014 Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records \u2014 and rival gang sects Mob Piru and South Side Compton Crips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Witnesses said South Side Compton Crips hung out with and provided protection to Bad Boy Records, which was founded by Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs and included rappers like The Notorious B.I.G., or Christopher Wallace. Mob Piru, part of the larger Bloods gang, was associated with Death Row Records, which featured rappers like Shakur, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The rival gangs fought and retaliated against each other both before and after Shakur\u2019s death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prosecutors allege Davis orchestrated the shooting to get revenge after Shakur and his entourage beat up Davis\u2019 nephew, Orlando \u201cBaby Lane\u201d Anderson, at the MGM Grand hours before Shakur was killed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Davis\u2019 book will be front and center at the trial<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The prosecutors\u2019 case relies on \u201cCompton Street Legend,\u201d the book Davis co-authored about the shooting and his time in the Crips, as well as police and media interviews he participated in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Davis\u2019 attorneys unsuccessfully fought to block the use of the book and a recording of a 2008 police interview in the trial. They argued the book was fictionalized and had a co-author, making it impossible to know which parts Davis wrote. They also argued Davis\u2019 interview with a federal task force investigating the deaths of Wallace and Shakur was supposed to be confidential and not used against him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The memoir says that Shakur and his entourage \u201ccrossed the line\u201d when they beat up Anderson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe couldn\u2019t let no record company studio gangsters do us like that,\u201d the book says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Davis was in the passenger seat of the Cadillac and passed a gun to the back seat earlier that night, according to the book. When they encountered Shakur and Knight, Davis claimed to see Shakur reach for a weapon and wrote that \u201cone of my guys from the back seat grabbed the Glock and started bustin\u2019 back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<a title=\"Hip-Hop hats, buckets, snapbacks, beanies.\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64516 size-full\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hip-hop-hats.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64516 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hip-hop-hats.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No weapon was found in Knight and Shakur\u2019s car, according to retired Las Vegas police Detective Clifford Mogg, who was assigned to the investigation in early 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The trial could bring closure \u2014 or more questions<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mopreme Shakur said nothing would bring back his stepbrother.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThat would be justice for me,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we all know that is unattainable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mopreme Shakur said he wants allegations that Combs was involved to be explored further. In his book, Davis claims that Combs wanted Knight and Shakur killed. Combs has denied having any involvement in Shakur\u2019s death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He\u2019s serving roughly four years in prison after being convicted of prostitution-related charges. Combs\u2019 attorney did not return emailed requests from The Associated Press for comment.
