Police and prosecutors cited Davis\u2019 statements and memoir as evidence supporting the allegation that Davis ordered the fatal shooting of the rap icon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In his motion, Sanft says that a detective\u2019s interview with the book\u2019s co-author, Yusuf Jah, \u201creveals that not all of the statements in Compton Street Legend can be attributed to admissions made directly by Defendant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Davis \u201cwas less open to talk about the murder of Tupac and restated information that was already out in public space,\u201d according to the motion, and statements cannot be directly attributed to Davis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sanft also argues that 2008 and 2009 interviews that Davis gave to police detectives \u201cwere the result of inducements, promises and psychological pressure, which tricked Defendant into confessing if these promises are no longer honored.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The defense attorney filed a separate motion seeking to sequester the jury during Davis\u2019 trial, citing the high-profile nature of the case and the potential for jurors to be exposed to news coverage or social media commentary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe past and ongoing media coverage of this case poses a substantial risk to the fairness of this trial,\u201d Sanft wrote. \u201cDuring trial, jurors who are not sequestered will return each evening to every form of media covering the day\u2019s testimony, commentary by legal analysts, and public opinion regarding Defendant\u2019s guilt or innocence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prosecutors filed their own motion as well, seeking to admit Davis\u2019 gang affiliation to establish a motive. Authorities have said Davis was a \u201cshot caller\u201d for the South Side Compton Crips in the 1990s, and he gave the order to shoot at Shakur\u2019s car in retaliation for a fight on the casino floor of the MGM Grand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the motion, the shooting allegedly stemmed from a gang feud between the South Side Compton Crips and Death Row Records. Death Row\u2019s head, Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight, was in Shakur\u2019s car the night of the shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<a title=\"Hip-Hop hats, buckets, snapbacks, beanies.\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64516 size-full\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hip-hop-hats.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64516 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hip-hop-hats.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cEvery critical event in this case is rooted in gang affiliation, hierarchy, and culture,\u201d the prosecution\u2019s motion states. \u201cThe rivalry was a gang rivalry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Judge Carli Kierny is scheduled to hear arguments in all of the motions on Tuesday, June 30. Trial is scheduled to begin on Aug. 10.
