Cole<\/a> has set the record straight on the rumor that <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/drake\" target=\"_blank\">Drake<\/a> originally wanted both him <em>and<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/kendrick-lamar\" target=\"_blank\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a> on \u201cFirst Person Shooter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dreamville rapper addressed the speculation on Carmelo Anthony\u2019s <em>7PM In Brooklyn<\/em> podcast as part of his press run to promote <a class=\"underline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/news\/j-cole-fall-off-billboard-200-first-week-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Fall-Off<\/em><\/a>, revealing that Drizzy initially asked Dot, not him, to jump on the chart-topping track.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I\u2019m not gonna say we were all supposed to be [on the song]. How it came to me was, before that beat ever made it to me, I think Drake wanted that to be a him and [Kendrick] song,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Cole then implied that Kendrick snubbed Drake\u2019s request, saying: \u201cMy interpretation is like\u2026 maybe when it wasn\u2019t moving fast enough or he wasn\u2019t getting the response he wanted, maybe he was like, \u2018Let me hit Cole.\u2019 \u2018Cause I think <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/boi-1da\" target=\"_blank\">Boi-1da<\/a> was pushing him like, \u2018Bro, you need to hit Cole.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never looked at that song like it was going to be all of us. I thought it was me and Drake. And I just had the beat; there was nothing on it. And I felt mad pressure \u2019cause I wanted to come through for him. I had to write that verse several times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"optanon-category-C0003\" width=\"900\" height=\"360\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Xty2gi5cMa8?si=CihKGjY4bfCUwmbG\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>J. Cole also revealed that he was planning on bringing both Kendrick Lamar and Drake out at 2024 <a class=\"underline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/news\/j-cole-dreamville-festival-continue-different-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dreamville Festival<\/a> \u2014 until their long-simmering beef boiled over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Drake] was supposed to be at Dreamville Fest. That was planned. He didn\u2019t come. Thank God he didn\u2019t come, though \u2014 no disrespect to Drake, I love Drake \u2014 but had he come, I would have felt more pressure to be on stage representing that energy,\u201d he said, referring to his Kendrick diss song \u201c7 Minute Drill\u201d for which he apologized at said festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to get Kendrick to come, too. That was my plan for Dreamville Fest that year. Mind you, I never got a chance to [ask Kendrick]. I told Drake. Drake knew that that was something that I wanted to happen. When we were on tour I was like, \u2018Yo, it\u2019d be crazy if both of y\u2019all came out at Dreamville Fest.\u2019 It\u2019s silly now to say. It\u2019s like, \u2018Nah, n*gga! There were other plans in the works.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were rumors that Drake\u2019s absence at Dreamville Festival was due to a disagreement with Cole, but as the North Carolina native clarified, it was because Drizzy didn\u2019t want to put him in an awkward position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could tell, when me and him talked, that my heart wasn\u2019t equivalent to his. So he was like, \u2018Yo, I didn\u2019t want to come down there and put you in a situation on that stage and say some shit that you would have to stand behind,&#8217;\u201d Cole recalled. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Thank you!\u2019 Because it left the space for me to [do] what I was supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"optanon-category-C0003\" width=\"900\" height=\"360\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/aRhvDmhIE3A?si=SYVuTcys5kqr7MrL\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>J. Cole\u2019s involvement in Kendrick and Drake\u2019s highly-publicized battle has been a major talking point throughout his recent press run.<\/p>\n<p>In <a class=\"underline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/news\/j-cole-drake-kendrick-lamar-fall-off-features\/\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with Cam\u2019ron<\/a>, he admitted that he only released \u201c7 Minute Drill\u201d because he felt pressurized to respond to Kendrick\u2019s \u201cLike That\u201d verse and didn\u2019t want to let it overshadow the rollout for <em>The Fall-Off<\/em>, which he was planning to drop in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t any disrespect in [Kendrick\u2019s verse]!\u201d Cole said. \u201cMy feeling was, \u2018Fuck!\u2019 Because now I know this [album] that I\u2019ve been working on for eight years, plus this other [mixtape, <em>Might Delete Later<\/em>] that I did as a set-up, n*ggas ain\u2019t gonna never let me put that out until I address this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThere was no malice in my heart \u2026 I [was] like, \u2018Let me say just enough to where it looks like I said something.\u2019 Everything I\u2019m saying, I know and he knows, it\u2019s all survivable.
