Vernon Coleman II, Kyle Eustice and Grant Rindner<\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Editor\u2019s Note: This story appears in the\u00a0Summer 2025 issue of XXL Magazine, on newsstands\u00a0now and available for sale on the XXL website.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>For eighteen years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/freshman\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>XXL<\/em> Freshman<\/a> has been a cornerstone of hip-hop, showcasing some of the genre\u2019s biggest talents early on.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/every-xxl-freshman-cover-since-2007\/\" target=\"_blank\">Since 2007<\/a>, we&#8217;ve tasked ourselves with meticulously finding potential stars that could done day have their very own cover. Each year, 10 or so artists get stamped into <em>XXL<\/em> Freshman history. Instead of being an exact science, it&#8217;s more like a lesson in social studies.<\/p>\n<p>As a whole, there have been more success stories than not, with picks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/kendrick-lamar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/j-cole\/\" target=\"_blank\">J. Cole<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/travis-scott\/\" target=\"_blank\">Travis Scott<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/playboi-carti\/\" target=\"_blank\">Playboi Carti<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/xxxtentacion\/\" target=\"_blank\">XXXTentacion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/future\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/lil-durk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lil Durk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/nipsey-hussle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nipsey Hussle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/lil-uzi-vert\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lil Uzi Vert<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/tags\/21-savage\/\" target=\"_blank\">21 Savage<\/a> and more going on to be some of rap&#8217;s biggest acts.\u00a0Other rappers have gone on to gain cult followings in their own right. There are even some Freshmen who have since passed away, whose names continue to live on in major ways. So, who is the biggest Freshman alumnus of all time? We&#8217;ve decided to let the fans decide.<\/p>\n<p>With 194 artists recognized as leaders of the new school for their respective classes, <em>XXL<\/em> has launched The Biggest and Best <em>XXL<\/em> Freshman Ever bracket to determine the ultimate valedictorian. To answer this question, the bracket narrows down the list to the top 32 artists, allowing fans to vote for the best Freshman ever. The selection criteria include commercial success, impact, influence and popularity. This means you will not see every Freshman nor every Freshman cover\u00a0included in the bracket since there can only be 32 rappers taking part in the competition. Voting kicks off\u00a0July 21 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/xxl\" target=\"_blank\"><em>XXL<\/em>\u2019s Instagram page<\/a>.
