Perez reveals the initial list starts with Jay-Z.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He comes back with ideas,&#8221; Perez told the publication. &#8220;It really starts with his thinking. It\u2019s easier for him. It\u2019s almost like a chef picking the specials for the evening. He comes up with the shortlist, and we work our way through that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several factors, including location, are considered when making a decision on the performer. In the end, Kendrick&#8217;s huge year and cultural impact won out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Kendrick Lamar] had an incredible year, very deserving of the attention,&#8221; Perez said. &#8220;The Grammys also acknowledged that. That\u2019s part of the consideration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New Orleans is so rich in culture,&#8221; she added. &#8220;We have to take into consideration (that) whoever is going to perform can speak to music culture, regardless of age. It has to nod to real music, regardless of the genre. And Kendrick does that. Tunechi&#8217;s name was brought up during discussions about who to pick, before the choice was ultimately made to pick Kendrick.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn\u2019t choose the artist, but I do believe that definitely there was consideration,&#8221; Perez said.<\/p>\n<p>Jay-Z faced scrutiny for his involvement in picking Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne, with some fans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/rappers-dont-agree-kendrick-lamar-super-bowl-lil-wayne\/\" target=\"_blank\">rappers sharing their opposition<\/a>. Lil Wayne <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/lil-wayne-hurt-super-bowl-halftime-snub\/\" target=\"_blank\">expressed his disappointment<\/a> on multiple occasions. But he has since revealed that he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/lil-wayne-kendrick-lamar-2025-super-bowl-halftime-show-convo\/\" target=\"_blank\">spoken to K-Dot<\/a> and is rooting for him
