The Hague Jazz 2008 – Hevia
One of acts that suprised me during The Hague Jazz was the one of José Angel Hevia, an Asturian bagpiper and flautist. If you think the bagpipe is a boring and oldfashioned instrument, check this musician out! He isn’t a traditionalist or a purist. Rather, the risk-taking Hevia combines Scottish/Celtic elements with everything from pop, rock, hip-hop, and new age to Spanish and Middle Eastern music. And Hevia doesn’t confine the bagpipes to an acoustic environment. As shown on this photo, the instrumentalist uses an electronic MIDI bagpipe that can sound like a violin, an accordion, and other instruments. A very enjoyable and danceable performance!
