However,I discovered you do not have to take the factory star nuts off the bed of the truck to remove and install the old\/new cables, you only need to remove the bolt from the tailgate side. So I was able to reuse my factory star nuts and then use the new star nuts included with the cables on the tailgate side which do fit the larger holes of the new cables.
